Mayor's Corner

Greetings!

There was a good turnout of citizens for the City Council meeting yesterday evening. After the standard reports (the Building Committee report showed there are 8 new homes, 7 remodels, 3 fences, 2 pools and 1 boat dock underway), the Council voted to hold a public hearing regarding the City's budget for the next fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2016-Sept. 30, 2017) at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, September 20th - before the next regular Council meeting.

The Council also approved the three year renewal of the City's contract with the Meadowlakes Property Owners Association. The POA's only employees are at our gate. Other POA day to day work is handled by City employees through the POA's contract with the City. The Council also approved the extension of our contract with Republic Waste (formerly known as BFI/Allied Waste). The name may have changed but the same excellent service will continue at the same rate as we've paid for the past 5 years. Meadowlakes citizens are the best at recycling of any of their customers - 70% of us recycle regularly.   We need to keep trimming those low-hanging branches so the Republic trucks can get down our streets. After all of this rain, another round of trimming may be in order, especially in the pecan orchard.

I don't know about you, but I had a call at 12:30 AM today warning me of potential flash flooding. I don't know if it was an automatic calling system that reached out to every phone in the region's area codes, but it made me wonder if the alert would have reached individuals who moved to this area but kept their old phone number (like my daughter with her New York City area code). I'll try to find out...

A recent state law added $1.50 to each vehicle registration fee, with the proceeds being split between the City and County where the vehicle is registered. Those funds are distributed quarterly and are available only for us to donate to eligible charities. Our Council voted to donate our share to the EMS to further its effort to provide car seats. At the August 6 Back to School Blast event, the EMS' Child Safety Seat Technicians were able to educate families about the importance of proper car seat installations and distribute 110 car seats. 25 families are already signed up for the next event scheduled for 9/17/16 (10am to 2 pm) at the Central EMS station at 609 Industrial Blvd in Marble Falls. If you know of anyone in need of a seat or education about proper installation, tell them to call the EMS at 830-693-7277.
