 Mayor's Corner
Greetings!
The City and the Property Owners Association (POA) each have specific responsibilities, and we work together to provide the best service possible for Meadowlakes. For example, the POA has primary responsibility for the boat/trailer storage area, the paving of our streets, the parks and memorial areas, and the entrance gate. You may not know that if you have a US or State of Texas flag that is in bad shape, you can take it to the guard at the gate and the POA will assure proper disposal.
After almost two weeks of national political conventions on television, I thought it might be a good time to remind everyone that our City Ordinances do address political signs, especially their size and placement. Just one sign (maximum size of 5 square feet - for example, 2.5 feet by 2 feet) is allowed per lot per candidate or cause, and the signs should not be placed in the right of way or blocking sight lines (especially at corners).
I went online to www.Meadowlakestexas.org and selected "Ordinances" to copy the info below, which is just a small selection from the entire Section regarding signs:
- Sec. 22-3. - Allowed signs.
The signs in this section are exempt from the requirement to obtain a prerequisite approved permit. Signs meeting the following requirements and restrictions are allowable signs in the city:
(1) A sign for a private, noncommercial purpose, expressing a political view, announcing such property as being the "Home of a Fighting Mustang" or the like, is allowed; provided, however, such sign is limited to a single sign per lot and not more than five square feet in area.
(2) Community or public service signs, political signs and expression of opinion signs are allowed subject to the following requirements and restrictions: A sign which solicits support or advertises a nonprofit community use, public use, social institution, a politician or point of view is permitted; provided such sign is not more than five square feet of surface area visible from the street. Such signs may include, but shall not be limited to, school activities, charitable programs, religious activities or events of community interest. Signs regarding seasonal holidays such as Christmas or Easter are not subject to the size restriction. Political signs may not be erected until one day after the filing deadline for that position and shall be removed within ten days following the concerned election. Such signs may be placed by the owner or occupant on such owner or occupant's land only.

Nomination for Officers of the POA Board Each year either two or three (depending on the year) of the positions on the POA Board of Directors expire, and it is the responsibility of the Association members to re-elect existing Board members or to nominate and elect new members to the board. This year, the terms of two members will expire: Mr. Joe Summers, President of the Board, and Mr. Len Fate, Director of Entry Gate Security. Association members must decide during the Association Annual Meeting on October 10, 2016, the officers to occupy the two expiring positions. The terms of the two expiring positions are for three years starting immediately after the Association's Annual Meeting. A Nominating Committee to identify property owners or residents has been established. The members of the Nominating Committee are Mrs. Patti Wray, email glwray1@verizon.net; Mr. Blair Feller, email blair.feller@gmail.com; and Mr. Wayne Thelen, email at wcthelen@hotmail.com. These committee members have all been actively involved in our community for many years. The Board asks that Association members to consider serving on the Board of Directors to assure that a solid cross-section of our community is represented. Property owners or residents who are interested in being considered for one of the two Board positions are asked to contact one of the three members of the Nominating Committee at their respective emails by July 27th.

 Memorial Bricks
As you may know, at the Meadowlakes Property Owners Association (POA) Meeting on February 16th, the Board voted to start a program that allows members of the Association to honor one or more family members who currently serve or have served in the United States Armed Forces by placing a Memorial Brick in designated sections of the Park.
The initial order was well received and 132 bricks have arrived and been installed at the Park and we have enough initialorders on hand to make another order. If you wish to participate and have not yet ordered a brick, please do so by July 20, 2016, our next order date. The 8"x 8" x 2 1/4" Bricks will still have the Honoree Name, Branch of Service, Motto and Duration served. Actual cost of each brick is still $29.50 each, payable in advance. Shipping is free in quantities of 10 or more and the POA will bear the associated installation cost. The program will continue to run periodically until we no longer have orders to fill. Should you wish to participate, see Debbie Holley at the POA office, 177 Broadmoor, with the necessary information and $29.50 cash or check for each Brick you wish to be placed in the park. Please insure we have the correct spelling and data when you order. The POA looks forward to and thanks you for your continued participation' Joe Summers, President, Meadowlakes Property Association Inc.

Walking Safety Tips
Many time-crunched runners work out before dawn or well into the evening- the same time slots when impaired drivers are often on the road. People may be tired from just waking up, and not as attentive as they should be. You can prevent your own gadgetry from contributing to an accident. Don't assume a driver sees you. In fact, imagine that a driver can't see you, and behave accordingly. Face traffic- It's easier to see, and react to, oncoming cars. Cars will see you more clearly too. Watch for early birds and night owls. At odd hours be extra careful. Early in the morning and very late at night, people may be overtired and not as attentive.Take the lead in promoting road safety, not road rage. "Always be courteous and follow traffic regulations to encourage a positive image of runners to the non-running public. Acknowledge drivers with a polite wave if they move over to the other side of the road for you. They will feel more inclined to do it again for someone else. Make room-If traffic gets heavy, or the road narrows, be prepared to move onto the sidewalk or shoulder of the road. Be seen-Wear high-visibility, brightly colored clothing. When out near or after sunset, reflective materials are a must. (If you don't own reflective clothing, a lightweight reflective vest is a great option.) And use a headlamp or handheld light so you can see where you're going, and drivers can see you. The light should have a bright LED (drivers see blinking red as a hazard).
Unplug your ears. Avoid using iPods or wearing headphones-you need to be able to hear approaching vehicles. If you do use headphones, run with the volume low and just one ear bud in. Watch the hills and road curves-Drivers' vision can suddenly be impaired by factors like sun glare or backdrops. |
