"Any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad."

~ Anne Geddes
Mayor's Corner

Greetings!
If you have a dog or cat, please be sure its vaccination includes leptospirosis, along with rabies, etc. We learned the hard way today that my dog's best friend / my best friend's dog was not protected. The disease is transmitted when an infected skunk, raccoon, etc. urinates on grass that is then eaten by one of our beloved animals - or in water that is rushing down the streets after a rain storm - and we've had way too much of that. The resulting disease can move very quickly through our beloved pet's system. If you aren't sure that leptospirosis protection was in your animal friend's most recent vaccination, please check with your vet.

On Monday, our very busy and dedicated Building Committee approved one more new home permit, bringing the total approved to 10 new homes, with some almost finished and others that have not yet broken ground. In addition, there are 8 remodels approved or in progress, plus a boat dock, a pool, a playscape and a couple of fences. One member of the Building Committee is assigned to each project and reports on status at each of their biweekly meetings. Now that the rain has stopped - at least for a while - there will be a lot of building going on in the neighborhood.

The City of Meadowlakes not only has a hard-working and excellent staff of City employees - we also are blessed with a diligent Property Owners Association. I know it took a while when I first retired here from Houston to figure out who is responsible for what. The POA owns and operates the entrance/exit gate, the streets, the RV storage area and the parks. The City owns City Hall plus the restaurant, pool, tennis complex and the golf course - and the water system. It is essential that the City own the golf course in order to assure that we have a place to dispose of our treated wastewater, which is why you see golf course watering going on even when we've had more than enough rain.

There is a City Council and a separate POA Board. The Mayor and the five members of the Council each serve two year terms - with half of us elected one year and the other half the next year. Our terms begin at the end of May. The 7 POA Board Members serve 3 year terms. After each election, the POA Board Members themselves select the President (now Joe Summers), and the other Board members serve as the VP/Community Relations, which includes parades, picnics, newcomer welcome, and special events (Jerrial Wafer), Secretary (Jim Woods), Treasurer (Joy Marcou), Streets (Gerry Mason), RV Storage (Dottie Stueckroth), and Gate Operations (Len Fate).   The POA contracts with the City to provide many day to day services. Although the POA has a separate newsletter available online, in the future their updates will also appear in this weekly City newsletter.

Friendly Reminder
Trash collection containers are to be placed on your curbside ready for pickup no later than 7:00 a.m every Friday. Trash containers must be maintained out of sight from the streets except during the time window for curbside pickup (noon the day prior and 8:00 a.m. the day following the scheduled day for pickup).

Residents are required to keep residences and yards in a neat and orderly condition. A person commits an offense if garbage containers are stored or placed in a manner such that containers are visible from the street after the following day of scheduled pickup.

Positive Rabies Alert

Recently there has been a positive case of rabies from a bat found in the Meadowlakes community. If you find a bat that is active by day or is found in a place where bats are not usually seen like in your home or on your lawn, it might be rabid. A bat that is unable to fly and is easily approached could very well be sick. Just looking at a bat, you cannot tell if it has rabies. Rabies can only be confirmed in a laboratory. We encourage you to please be aware and be safe! If you have any questions or find a bat please contact the Animal Control (Toll Free) 877-816-8136.
