 Mayor's Corner
Greetings!
A new state law effective January 1, 2016, provides for a new fee of $1.50 to be added to the registration of each vehicle in Burnet County. This money goes into a "Child Safety Fund", with restrictions on how it can be used. Those fees are then passed along to the cities in Burnet County, based on the percentage of the total county population that resides in each city. Total fees collected for the first quarter were $15,625.50 - which means 10,417 vehicles were registered in Burnet County during the first quarter of this year. Of the total 45,259 estimated population of Burnet County as of January 1, 2015, the County Auditor's office assigned Meadowlakes an estimated population of 1,818, which means we'll receive $564.89 for the first quarter of 2016 (net after the deduction of 10% for "county administrative fees"). We will have to read the fine print in this new law to figure out how we are allowed to spend this money. Based upon the estimated populations of other Burnet County cities, Meadowlakes is the fourth largest, behind Marble Falls (6,257), Burnet (6,107), and Granite Shoals (5,003). Bertram came in fifth with 1,413 (it is growing very fast now), and Cottonwood Shores was sixth at 1,139. Another 442 live in Highland Haven, and 399 are in the part of Horseshoe Bay that is within Burnet County. The majority (22,681) live outside of any city limits, so Burnet County got to keep 50.11% of the total amount collected (along with the 10% off the top for administrative fees the cities must pay) - a total of $8,610.03 to the County.
