"Now and then it's good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy"

Mayor's Corner

Greetings!
Snakes apparently feel free to travel on our city streets - yesterday (Tuesday), a city employee observed (and killed) a coral snake (about 18 inches to 2 feet long) on Mahan at Turkey Run. I've seen a couple of small (and very dead) rattlesnakes in the street gutters. Before you reach into your flower bed to pull weeds, please think about the undesirable things that might be in there and be extra careful!

The City Council met Tuesday evening for a workshop from 4:00-5:00, primarily to receive the report of the Capital Improvements Committee from its chair, David Baker. This very diverse and excellent committee spent many hours over the past few months focusing on what our citizens may be expected to want and need from the City (and the POA) in the future. The next step will be to come up with more details, to estimate costs and to prioritize those suggestions while the Council starts working very soon on the budget for FY2017. Public hearings will be held to discuss the proposed budget, and it must be completed by no later than the end of August, which will be here before we know it.

During the regular Council meeting, I along with Council Members Mike Barry and Jerry Drummond were sworn in to serve our second two year terms. We appreciate the community's confidence in us - at least I prefer to think you are satisfied with the job we have been doing...since no one ran against any of us! If you get the Highlander, you will probably see our picture in the next edition. Council Member Barry Cunningham was unanimously chosen by the Council to serve as Mayor Pro Tem - to serve as Mayor in the event of my absence. I believe we have a very strong and diverse Council and an excellent City Manager and staff. It is important for our citizens to be as involved as much as possible in the various committees, the Council and/or the Property Owners Association.
