"A child has a special way of adding joy to everyday"

Mayor's Corner

Greetings!

The short block of Avenue N between Ninth Street and 1431 is officially closed. You can still get to Ford & Crew's hardware store by continuing across Broadway on Avenue N and turning left on Ninth Street. To go east on 1431, we will have to turn right on Broadway, go past the baseball fields and across the creek, and then turn left on Avenue L. To go west, we can either turn left on Broadway or (for now at least) on Ninth Street and continue to Avenue Q and turn right. At least there is a stop light at that intersection. There is none at Avenue L and 1431. Hopefully, by the time the reconfiguration of Avenue N to connect directly with Bluebonnet is finished, the State Highway Dept. will have installed stop lights at that new intersection. Timing will be everything!

The Marble Falls City Council meeting last night drew a big crowd (including me). This is Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention Month, so they recognized the Burnet County Child Welfare Board. Also recognized were the founder and volunteers for the 16th Annual Children's Day Celebration in Johnson Park. Everything will be free for the kids on Saturday April 16, 2016, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Free food, free games and activities, a talent show, prizes, etc. Mark your calendar if you wish to volunteer or take your family (or maybe plan your travel to avoid traffic jams).

The Marble Falls Council also approved a request to move the historic home currently located at 911 Seventh Street. It was built in 1904 and served as the parsonage for the First Baptist Church. Somehow, it will be picked up and moved ACROSS U.S. Highway 281 to its new location at 604 Avenue F. The move will take several hours. I cannot imagine how this will be accomplished without re-routing Hwy 281 traffic. I'll try to let you know the move's date, start time and ETA so you can either watch and be amazed - or avoid the area altogether.

The next Meadowlakes City Council meeting will be at our own City Hall next Tuesday evening, April 13, at 5:00 PM.

Friendly Reminder

If you have brush to be picked up please call the City Hall to be put on the weekly brush pickup list. We are seeing more limbs that are being put out for us to chip that are smaller or larger than the required diameter. A door hanger will be left at any home that has items that do not meet the requirements. We encourage you to please not leave piles of brush out for pickup until the day before the scheduled pickup (every Thursday of each week).
To review the guidelines for the items that can and  cannot be picked up please click here
If you have trees overhanging the streets, they must be trimmed to provide clearance of at least 12 feet above the street corridor.

                                           Thank you!
Lunch with an Author

Debut author Antonio Ruiz-Camacho will speak at the Marble Falls Public Library's Lunch with an Author program, Friday, April 22nd at 11:30 AM. His story collection "Barefoot Dogs" follows the Arteaga family in the aftermath of the kidnapping of the family patriarch, and their flight from modern Mexico. In a New York Times book review (April 3, 2015), Patricia Engel describes Antonio's writing style as "...muscular and evocative. He revels in intimately observed moments and sharp but nuanced characterizations..." This book is also available in Spanish and will soon be available in Dutch.
Antonio was raised in Toluca, Mexico and studied at Stanford University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he received his MFA. He now lives in Austin with his family.
"Barefoot Dogs" will be available for purchase at the program and for checkout in the library. The program is free, but donations are welcome. Reservations are required and seating is limited. Please make your reservation in person at the Marble Falls Public Library, 101 Main, Marble Falls, or by calling (830) 693-3023. For more information
