"If nothing ever changed, there'd be no butterflies."

MAYOR'S CORNER
Greetings!

Lots of information from the March 1st Marble Falls City Council meeting will be of interest to Meadowlakes citizens. The Avenue N straightening project is now scheduled to be completed by June 9, 2016.  In spite of taking multiple core samples before they broke ground, they ran into a pocket of unstable soils - described as being like quicksand - that caused delays as the city and the contractor decided on the best and most cost effective approach. They now hope to keep Avenue N open until March 24th, after which we'll have to take Broadway to either Avenue L (if heading East on 1431) or Avenue Q (if heading west or to get to HEB or to Ford & Crew's hardware store on 9th Street). Marble Falls City officials met with the Texas Dept. of Transportation's new district engineer, Terry McCoy, who is from this area, and he already has his staff working on acquiring what they'll need for a new stop lights when Avenue N is completed and connects directly with Bluebonnet. Nothing is easy - or fast.
Preliminary plans were presented for the new building that will house the Marble Falls Police Department - on Avenue N between 6th Street and the Fire Department. It will be a one story building on the Avenue N side and two stories on the back/Avenue O side. They are still in the early stages of design, so it may not be finished until the end of 2017.
The new Marble Falls ISD Superintendant, Dr. Chris Allen, reported on the various building improvements that are underway, thanks to the $6.55 million dollar bond that passed in 2014. The school district had 4,170 students enrolled when school started this past September. That number has grown to 4,191 as of the end of February. At this time, 1,189 are in high school. The UIL realignment of school districts that will play each other in the fall of 2016 may have resulted in longer drives, but Dr. Allen said there will be a lot less traffic as we play Medina, Boerne, Dripping Springs, Kerrville Tivy, Alamo Heights, Seguin and Lockhart instead of Austin area suburbs. I was writing fast, so I can't guarantee this list. At least we won't have to play schools that are twice our size all the time.
I attended the LCRA meeting regarding aquatic plant management schedules for this year. We are in their "blue" zone, which means herbicide treatment requests for the first of up to 3 phases of treatment will have to be submitted to LCRA by March 18th. The first treatment can begin April 1st and must end by April 7th. The LCRA doesn't expect Eurasian Watermilfoil to be as big a problem this year because the lakes are almost full and the LCRA voted to pass water through to the rice farmers for irrigation purposes. Go to www.lcra.org/waterweeds  for more information. An interesting fact: 11 pounds of hydrilla, when pulled out of the lake and laid out to dry, becomes just one (1) ounce of powder when dry.

VETERAN'S MEMORIAL UPDATE

At the POA Meeting that was held on February 16th, the Board voted to start a program that allows members of the Association to honor one or more family members who currently serve or have served in the United States Armed Forces by placing a Memorial Brick in designated sections of the Park.

The 8"x 8"x 21/4" Bricks will have the Honoree Name, Branch of Service, its Motto and Duration served as shown below. Colors may be as shown or slightly different to provide contrast for the final design.

Actual cost of each brick is $29.50 each, payable in advance. Shipping is free in quantities of 10 or more and the POA will bear the associated installation cost. The program will run in phases through December 2016 or longer but we encourage your early participation. We plan to set the first batch by Memorial Day May 30, 2016. I intend to buy several myself.

Should you wish to participate, see Debbie Holley at the POA office, 177 Broadmoor St, with the necessary information and $29.50 cash or check for each Brick you wish placed in the park.

The POA looks forward to and thanks you for your participation in advance.

Joe Summers, POA President

LUNCH WITH AN AUTHOR

Come to the Marble Falls Public Library to hear award winning author Karen Witemeyer at the Lunch with an Author program, Friday, March 18 at 11:30 AM. Karen will talk about her book, "A Worthy Pursuit". She is the author of 12 books, so far.

"After growing up in California, Karen moved to Texas to attend Abilene Christian University where she earned bachelor and master's degrees in Psychology. It was also there that she met and married her own Texas hero. He roped her in good, for she has lived in Texas ever since. In fact, she fell so in love with this rugged land of sweeping sunsets and enduring pioneer spirit, that she incorporates it into the pages of her novels, setting her stories in the small towns of a state that burgeoned into greatness in the mid- to late1800s. A life-long bookworm, Karen is living her dream by writing novels. Her books have consistently hit bestseller lists and have garnered awards such as the ACFW Carol Award, the Holt Medallion, and the Inspirational Reader's Choice Award. In addition, she is a multiple RITA and National Reader's Choice finalist. Karen is also a sought-after speaker for national writing conferences and regional workshops." From karenwitemeyer.com

"A Worthy Pursuit" will be available for purchase at the program and for checkout in the library. The program is free, but donations are welcome. Reservations are required and seating is limited. Please make your reservation in person at the Marble Falls Public Library, 101 Main, Marble Falls, or by calling (830) - 693 - 3023. For information on upcoming programs, please visit the calendar page at www.MarbleFallsLibrary.org.
