"Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced"

MAYOR'S CORNER
Greetings!

This is my 86th "Mayor's Corner" - what was I thinking when I started doing this July 2, 2014?
There was a great turn-out for the POA's official celebration of its lovely new memorial park on Meadowlakes Drive at Fairway Lane. The Highland Lakes Men's Chorus sang beautiful patriotic songs, recognizing the attendees associated with each branch of service. City employee Tom Stueckroth was recognized for his amazing work - including the gorgeous pergola, stonework and landscaping.
The POA is planning to offer residents the opportunity to purchase individual pavers with the name of a loved one who served in any of our five branches of armed services. I'm sure more information will be forthcoming soon.
The community garden (on Mahan between Deer Lick and Quail) is experiencing great demand for plots. City water is available to keep the gardens green. The city may even expand the plowed area. Contact City Hall if you are interested in a plot.

Lunch with an Author at the Marble Falls Public Library

Come to the Marble Falls Public Library to hear award winning author Karen Witemeyer at the Lunch with an Author program, Friday, March 18 at 11:30 AM. Karen will talk about her book, "A Worthy Pursuit". She is the author of 12 books, so far.

"After growing up in California, Karen moved to Texas to attend Abilene Christian University where she earned bachelor and master's degrees in Psychology. It was also there that she met and married her own Texas hero. He roped her in good, for she has lived in Texas ever since. In fact, she fell so in love with this rugged land of sweeping sunsets and enduring pioneer spirit, that she incorporates it into the pages of her novels, setting her stories in the small towns of a state that burgeoned into greatness in the mid- to late1800s. A life-long bookworm, Karen is living her dream by writing novels. Her books have consistently hit bestseller lists and have garnered awards such as the ACFW Carol Award, the Holt Medallion, and the Inspirational Reader's Choice Award. In addition, she is a multiple RITA and National Reader's Choice finalist. Karen is also a sought-after speaker for national writing conferences and regional workshops." From karenwitemeyer.com

"A Worthy Pursuit" will be available for purchase at the program and for checkout in the library. The program is free, but donations are welcome. Reservations are required and seating is limited. Please make your reservation in person at the Marble Falls Public Library, 101 Main, Marble Falls, or by calling (830) - 693 - 3023. ZIKA IN TEXAS

Zika virus is primarily spread to people through mosquito bites. Rarely, the virus is spread from mother to child. Spread of the virus through blood transfusion and sexual contact has also been reported.
Approximately 80% of people infected with the virus do not become ill. For those who do develop symptoms, illness is generally mild and typically lasts a few days to a week. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes).
Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon and fatalities are rare. An increase in Guillain-Barr syndrome was noted during an outbreak of Zika virus in French Polynesia in 2014. An increase in microcephaly was noted during an outbreak of Zika virus in Brazil in 2015. Whether Zika virus infection causes these conditions has not yet been established.
Zika in Texas
Zika Virus - Feb. 11, 2016
Texas has 11 cases of Zika virus disease. Nine are travelers who were infected abroad and diagnosed after they returned home. One case involves a Dallas County resident who had sexual contact with someone who acquired the Zika infection while traveling abroad. Case counts by county:
Bexar County - 2
Dallas County - 2
Harris County - 7
DSHS recommends travelers avoid mosquito bites while abroad and for seven days after returning, in case they have been exposed to Zika virus. To help control mosquitoes in Texas, property owners should drain and dump standing water outside their homes and cover water storage containers.
