MAYOR'S CORNER
| |
Greetings!
The Council held a workshop on Tuesday, immediately before its regular meeting. We discussed changes to the noise ordinance, parking and traffic control issues, short term property rental, and the need to update our Building Codes. The previously existing Ordinance 20-58 devoted one page to noise. As revised and adopted during the subsequent regular Council meeting, the new Noise Ordinance 2015-05 is 8 pages long and goes into much greater detail. The revised ordinance should be available on the Meadowlakes website very soon.
The Council also adopted Ordinance 2015-06 updating the master plan for parking on our streets and the location of traffic signs. In some areas, if vehicles are parked on both sides of the street, it is difficult for regular traffic to even see approaching vehicles. We have lots of walkers (with and without dogs or baby strollers), people on bicycles or in golf carts or on skateboards or hover boards, so drivers need to be extra careful all the time, but especially when there are vehicles parked on the streets blocking the drivers' views. That is why our maximum speed is 25 MPH - and in some places, just 20 MPH.
The Building Codes are established internationally and updated periodically. We last approved the 2009 version, so it was time to update. Because there are still some issues with the international version adopted this year, we chose to adopt the 2012 version at this time.
Finally, the Council approved appointments to the Planning & Zoning Commission of Priscilla Muse, Paul Pearce and Jerrial Wafer (reappointment in Jerrial's case). We greatly appreciate our citizens' willingness to serve!
Mike Phillips with the Marble Falls Area Volunteer Fire Department (we contract with them to serve Meadowlakes) reported on the Department's operations and activities. As an example, it responded to 20 calls in Meadowlakes in the month of October - all were related to medical emergencies. A fire truck accompanies an ambulance in case any equipment on the ambulance fails or any special equipment available only on the fire truck is needed. Response time for Meadowlakes calls averaged 10 minutes from the time the VFD received the call to the time of arrival at a home in Meadowlakes.

BULK LEAF COLLECTION PROGRAM
| |
The City of Meadowlakes is very fortunate to have several hundred mature pecan trees, however these beautiful trees produce extremely large volume of leaf foliage every fall. In the past the only method available for disposal of the foliage was either to mulch it during mowing or by raking and bagging the leaves for pickup by the City's solid waste contractor.
The City is proud to announce that we are now offering three bulk leaf pickups in the coming months.
You will find attached, a "Leaf Collection" brochure explaining the collection program in more detail. If you have any questions regarding this program please feel free to contact the Public Works Department at 830-693-2951 between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Author Program at the Marble Falls Public Library | |
The Marble Falls Public Library's "Lunch with an Author" program welcomes author Mark Pryor Friday, November 13 at 11:30 AM. Mark will talk about his latest novel "Hollow Man", set in Austin, TX. In addition to "Hollow Man", Mark has written a mystery series.
"Mark grew up in Hertfordshire, England, and now lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife and three young children. His first real career was as a newspaper reporter in Colchester, Essex. There, he covered the police and crime beat for almost two years. He also wrote stories on foreign assignments, including accounts from Northern Ireland while with the British Army, and from Romania where he covered the first-anniversary celebrations of that country's revolution. Mark moved to America in 1994, mostly for the weather. He attended journalism school at the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill, and then law school at Duke University...He is currently an Assistant District Attorney with the Travis County DA's office. Or, as he tells his kids, "I help catch bad guys." Simplistic, yes, but you try explaining the judicial system to six-year-old twins!" - From www.markpryorbooks.com "Hollow Man" will be available for purchase at the program and for checkout in the library. The program is free, but donations are welcome. Reservations are required and seating is limited. MILITARY MEMORIAL ASSISTANCE
| |
Hopefully, you have noticed that the initial groundwork for the memorial that has been completed. We are about to install the irrigation lines, pour the footing for the memorial monolith and the footings and posts for the pergola, then lay out the stone pathways and memorial circle limestone edging.
The memorial monument will be a granite stone monolith from our area, and bronze plaques commemorating the five military services, and bronze inscription so they will always be legible on the stone.
In response to several residents offers to help, we have created an account for donations to the memorial. If you wish to donate to the memorial, please come by the City Hall. Any of the young ladies in the office can accept donations and provide you with a receipt of donation.
We are working to control the costs of the memorial and the landscaping, any donations will help. If you have any questions please contact James Woods at jrwpdw@nctv.com
