MAYOR'S CORNER
| | Greetings!
This past Thursday, Oct. 1st, I was one of the 124 Meadowlakes residents who took advantage of the convenience of getting our flu shots out of the way without leaving the neighborhood. HEB does this for us every year, but I believe this may have been the best turn out ever! Long-time resident and HEB representative Glenna Deskins coordinated everything so it seemed more like a social gathering of old friends than a boring medical visit. Thanks also go to Barbara Bluhm, Brenda Eubank, and Cheryl Fernandes who assisted with registration and payment. If you were NOT one of the 124, it is time to get that flu shot!
In the orchard area, the pecan trees were fooled by the wet May, so they loaded up with new branches and extra pecans...which are now dropping early. Some pecans appear to be ripe, but a lot of them will go straight into the trash. After the wet spring, the City eliminated the limits on watering. Lately, the water bills for some homes have been much higher than usual. For whatever reason, breaks in pipes are occurring, and the ground is so dry that the homeowners don't notice until they receive the next month's water bill. If the break is between the meter and your home, it is up to you to fix it. If the leak is the City's side of the meter (from the water main) it is not metered; thus the customer would not have been charged and no adjustment would be required.
Monday afternoon, I observed the Marble Falls Parks & Recreation Commission meeting. The Economic Development Corp. (EDC) presented options for using the money raised by a special tax, including major changes to Johnson Park - such as removing the skate park on Yett at Main Street, and the pool and tennis courts by Lakeside Pavilion - not sure whether or where they would put replacements. The EDC hopes to bring in a large hotel and conference center to be built at the end of Main Street in the newly cleared area across from the skate park. They also talked about adding a lot of parking for Lakeside Pavilion and either an outdoor theater or a beach - or both - plus a bridge to facilitate getting across the creek between that area and Johnson Park. The softball field will probably be turned into a soccer field. The entire area from the lake to Hwy 1431 and between US 281 and Avenue N is targeted for development - including homes, apartments and shopping. Not sure when...or if...any of this will happen, but they have certainly cleared a lot of space between Yett and Lakeside Pavilion.
Tuesday evening, I attended the Marble Falls City Council meeting. Of interest to probably all of us is their plan to reduce speed limits on Hwy 281 through Marble Falls, all the way south to the intersection with Hwy 71. The map they projected onto a screen was too small for me to read the details, but as best I could tell, from 1431 to south of the bridge, the speed limit will be 35 (now 45), with similar reductions as you head south. The Texas Highway Dept. will have to put up new signs before any changes apply. Once the signs are in place, the plan is to give drivers a 2-week grace period (to notice the changes), followed by 2 weeks of warning tickets, followed by regular enforcement. The Marble Falls Council unanimously approved these changes.
Our next Meadowlakes City Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 13th at 5:00 PM. We'll probably have a work session before the regular meeting, with the exact times to be posted by this Friday. Input by our citizens is welcome!

MEMORIAL GARDEN COMING SOON
| |
You will notice there is a lot of activity upon entering Meadowlakes. For decades, the two islands that belong to the property owners association at our entrance (and the two other islands on Firestone Drive and Columbine St) remained without landscaping. The Association Board has approved part of the Parks funding to beautify the island nearest the entrance and to place a military memorial.
The Association is working with the City to help keep our costs down and have started removal of the existing topsoil to get rid of the native weeds and grass, then move on to install xeriscaping with paths, evergreen plants, and the memorial.
We will be placing a new base material, install pathways, a center circle for the memorial, a pergola for shade, install evergreen plants that are low maintenance and drought tolerant, a drinking fountain, and irrigation. The plants and xeriscaping should assure that the new park will look good into the future and worthy of the memorial
