MAYOR'S CORNER
| | Greetings!
We had a good sized audience for our City Council meeting Tuesday evening. We even had a few who came at 3:30 PM for the Council's workshop. We appreciate it when our citizens take the time to come to our meetings.
On the agenda was the final approval of the property tax rate. The total taxable valuation for all Meadowlakes properties, as determined by the County Tax Assessor/Collector (Stan Hemphill), increased quite a bit (around 8%). The "average" Meadowlakes home that was valued at $227,739 in 2014 is now valued at $244,438. As a result, the City will not be raising the tax rate. It will remain at $0.3206 per $100 valuation, which means that "average" homeowner will be paying approximately $54 more in taxes than they did last year, with about 20% of it used for routine City operations and the rest for payments on our bonded debt.
A large part of the Council's Tuesday evening meeting was devoted to the City's budget for the fiscal year that begins October 1, 2015 (FY 2016). The biggest change by far relates to bringing the Hidden Falls complex directly under the City Manager. In the past couple of months, major repairs and improvements in the restaurant have already been completed. (I wish I had those tile floors that look like hardwood for my home!) Other improvements are ongoing, with an ultimate goal of attracting our residents to our golf course and family friendly restaurant - a unique facility for this area.
Too many people - both our own residents and those who live beyond the Meadowlakes gate - think Hidden Falls is a PRIVATE "Members Only" club. It most definitely is not! We need your help in getting the word out that the food and service are great, the golf course is in great shape, and it is all open to the public. Restaurant hours of operation will be extended in the near future, and a family-friendly menu will make it a great place for lunch or supper. It is one of the few places in Burnet County that can handle large groups for meals, meetings and social events. The holiday season will be here before we know it! Plan now!!!
