MAYOR'S CORNER
Greetings!

In spite of the lack of rain, the vegetation on some of our street corners has managed to grow enough to make the intersections dangerous. If you live on a corner, please take the time to be sure cars (not just the taller trucks and SUVs) can see and be seen by oncoming traffic. We have an ongoing problem at the corner of Stewart and Quail because of a home that has been vacant for more than a year. There are legal reasons why the City can't just go in and at least clear sight lines...we are working on it!

Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment, but sometimes I believe it is best if I attend meetings of other entities in our area so I can know what is going on. This week, I attended a special meeting of the Pedernales Electric Coop Board on Monday morning from 10:00 until noon. I know we can watch the meetings online at the PEC website, but being there is better. At the regular PEC Board meeting a couple of weeks ago, they discussed closing the office in Bertram and serving that area from their Marble Falls and Liberty Hill offices. Understandably, that caused an uproar in Bertram since $1.4 Million of their tax base would be moving away.   Nothing is settled yet.

Of course I took part in our Meadowlakes Public Hearing at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, Sept. 1st, to discuss the proposed tax rate and budget for Fiscal Year 2016 (which starts October 1st). The tax rate would not change, but the average homeowner would see a tax increase of about $54/year ($1.00 per week) because our home values increased this year. The next regular Council meeting, at which the Council will vote on the tax rate and the budget, will be held on Tuesday, September 8th at 5:00 PM.

Tuesday evening, I decided to attend the Marble Falls City Council meeting. In addition to discussing their FY 2016 tax rate and budget, they reviewed and approved developments on the south side of town: (1) The 58+ acres at the southeast corner of US 281 at Hwy 71 was rezoned to include "mixed use" (stores) and single family housing. They had previously approved development of 300+ acres on the southwest corner of that intersection. (2) The development of up to 220 apartments (12 buildings - some 3 story, others 2 story) on the west side of US 281 at Max Starcke Dam Road. They also indicated that they are close to finalizing the plan to moving Avenue N so it runs straight into Bluebonnet Drive instead of curving between Storm's and the Mexican restaurant. Finally, the new Police Department that is to be constructed on Avenue N (adjacent to the Fire Station) will be a 2-story building, with the final contract to be presented at their next meeting on Sept. 15th. Construction of the new HEB complex should begin before too long. Traffic on Avenue N promises to be complicated.

the location to be determined. There is 7 weeks of training plus a live simulation and graduation. Your only commitment is approximately 26 hours of your time.  This program is made possible by a CAPCOG Citizens Corps Grant Program/CERT which provides the funds for training equipment and supplies.
