MAYOR'S CORNER
| | Greetings!
The City has a new piece of equipment that will help keep our gutters clear. Manual labor may be required in some areas in order to break loose the mud and rocks that have accumulated (and now act as dams that cause streets to fill with water more quickly). But after the debris is loosened, it can be vacuumed up and hauled away. Yesterday, they worked on Olympia Fields where golfers cross to go from the fifth hole to the sixth hole, and the results are a vast improvement. The next step will be to spray the sneaky flat leaf sticker weeds. They look like a pretty little flower, but that yellow flower turns into stickers that I (and my dog) think are worse than "goatheads" (really bad stickers that were common in Grapevine when I was a kid).
The Council held a work session before our regular meeting yesterday. Based on the light attendance, I'm guessing that our citizens trust us to do the right things for the City. That is certainly the goal of all Council Members, our great City Manager Johnnie Thompson, and the entire City staff. We must have confirmation of our current home values from the County Tax Assessor-Collector before the Council can finalize the City budget and hold public hearings. I know my home went up about 6% this year, which is a good thing if I wanted to sell...but I intend to stay here as long as possible.
Have a great week! Mary Ann Raesener Mayor

WEBWORM CO-OP "SPRAY 1" REPORT
| |
Webworm Co-op - "Spray 1" Report
The Co-op completed first spray of the city's pecan trees on June 26, spraying 1168 trees with the tractor spray rig and 201 trees by hand sprays, providing 83 percent coverage of 1653 total trees. This spray's coverage represents a 10 percent increase over the most recent spray that was performed in 2013. Property owners are to be commended for their efforts in increasing the overall coverage, since maintaining a high rate of coverage is very important for effective overall control.
The spray was very successful in halting further development of first generation webworm and tent caterpillar infestations. No new webs or new signs of activity have been observed since the spray.
The Co-op is preparing for the potential of a second spray being required, recently completing a thorough survey of all properties with an emphasis of accurately accounting for all trees and refinement of whether particular trees can be tractor sprayed or require hand spraying. Results have now been incorporated in the Co-op's database. The Co-op appreciates the patience and effort provided by residents to Coop volunteers during the survey. The Co-op will mail out a second billing later this week to approximately half of the property owners requesting funds needed to cover a second spray, a spray that will likely be required later this year.
