CITY COUNCIL ELECTION

The City of Meadowlakes cancelled their May 9th, 2015 election, due to the incumbents running for re-election were unopposed.  At the regular City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 12th, Councilmembers (left to right) Clancy Stephenson (Place 4), Alton Fields (Place 2) and Barry Cunningham (Place 5) were sworn into office by City Secretary, Christy Fath.  Our congratulations go out to these Councilmembers on another term.  Also at this meeting, Councilmember Barry Cunningham was appointed as Mayor Pro-Tem.

MAYOR'S CORNER
Greetings!

After writing last week about the need to trim trees that hang too low over streets, especially in the pecan orchard area, Mother Nature moved in to prove how fragile those big old trees can be. Very early Sunday morning, the rain and wind intensified in the Meadowlakes boat ramp area and took down a huge pecan tree at the entrance to the picnic area.

The tree was estimated to be at least 120 years old, based on the circumference (10 ½ feet) and a count of the rings. It was in the early stages of root rot, but that should not have been enough to uproot it. Very large limbs were broken off of other trees at a home adjacent to the boat ramp, so there may have been some sort of downburst.

The POA owns the park, the streets and the boat ramp, and it contracts with the City to maintain them. In this case, the County also jumped into to assist the City in the clean-up since the boat ramp is a major "waterway" that handles a huge amount of run-off for us.

By the time I walked back down to the park Monday evening, the waterway (boat ramp) was completely cleared. There was a large pile of huge sections of the trunk (one was estimated to weigh 8,000 pounds) awaiting pick-up for repurposing, and another gigantic pile of limbs and leaves was piled near Meadowlakes Drive to be removed and disposed of this week.   The hole in the ground left by the tree and some adjacent concrete areas still need attention.

We love these beautiful trees - their shade, their pecans - but we rarely think about the damage they can cause if they fall directly on a home. Thank goodness that did not happen this time!

BOAT RAMP CLOSURE

Due to the recent storm, the public boat ramp at Meadowlakes Lakeside Park will be closed for repairs for approximately 2-4 days next week.  Watch for notification of which days the ramp will be closed.

REMODELING PROJECTS

Before starting a remodeling project, please submit a scope of work to the City Secretary, Christy Fath, at City Hall, for review in determining if a building permit is going to be needed or not.  A lot of projects end up being more involved than first anticipated, so it's always best to check to see if you need a permit before starting a project to avoid any citations and fines.  We appreciate your cooperation on this matter.

UPCOMING MEETINGS

The Building Committee meeting scheduled for Monday, May 25th at 2:30 p.m. has been cancelled due to the Memorial Day Holiday.  The next Building Committee meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 8th at 2:30 p.m.

SNAKE ADVISORY

Recently the City has received several calls regarding sightings of snakes and several snakes have been exterminated in the past few weeks. Please click here to find an excerpt from a publication from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
