MAYOR'S CORNER

Among the many wonderful things about living in Meadowlakes is the availability of so many opportunities to participate in clubs and groups that meet right here in the neighborhood, many of them at Hidden Falls Restaurant. In addition to golf and tennis, there are several groups that play cards (bridge, hand and foot, poker) and other games on a regular basis, and there is a yoga class on most Mondays at 10:00 AM.

Hidden Falls Restaurant is the home of a variety of groups. The Granite Hills Luncheon Club meets at Hidden Falls the first Wednesday of each month. The Highland Lakes Service League meets there for lunch the second Tuesday of each month and holds its big annual fundraising golf tournament there. There are political groups - from both sides of the aisle - Republican Women hold their luncheon meetings the second Wednesday each month, and the Highland Lakes Democratic Women meet there the fourth Thursday of each month. If you are new to the neighborhood, or recently retired and finally have some spare time, call Hidden Falls at 830-693-4467 for more information. Or call me: 830-693-6135.

WATERING RESTRICTION EASING
On September 9th, the Meadowlakes City Council Workshop, City Manager, Johnnie Thompson, reported that the citizens of Meadowlakes have done an exemplary job by meeting and exceeding the water savings targets.  Due to overwhelming response by the citizens, water usage has actually decreased by 38%.  As a result, effective immediately the City will be easing water restrictions to allow for one additional watering day per week.  The watering schedule is as follows:

Residential:

Odd number addresses: Wednesdays and Saturdays

Even number addresses: Thursdays and Sundays

Commercial: (including large landscapes) Tuesdays and Fridays

Watering Hours: Midnight to 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. to midnight.

An advantage in the twice-a-week watering is that it would reduce the wasting of water by minimizing the need and frequency of flushing fire hydrants.  The City has received several calls recently regarding the taste/odor issues with our potable water, which would normally require the flushing of the lines via use of a fire hydrant.

The City Council will review the water consumption again at its regular meeting on October 14th.

EMERGENCY TRAINING

REDUCE YOUR LOSSES IN A COMMUNITY DISASTER

In 95% of all emergencies, bystanders and everyday citizens provide the first immediate assistance on the scene. Without the proper training, how would you know what to do? You may not think you need to learn - but the moment an incident or disaster occurs - you will regret not having learned.

CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is a training program that prepares you to help yourself, your family and your neighbors in the event of a disaster when emergency personnel may not be able to reach everyone right away.

Under the direction of local emergency responders, CERT teams help provide critical support by giving immediate assistance to victims, providing damage assessment information and helping to organize other volunteers at a disaster site.

Volunteers trained in CERT also offer a potential workforce value for performing duties such as shelter support, crowd control and evacuation. The role of a CERT volunteer is to help others until trained emergency personnel arrive. Through this training, you will know better how to help yourself and those around you survive in the immediacy of the disaster.

On Thursday, April 23, 2015
the Burnet County Office of Emergency Management will begin holding a series of free CERT training classes for residents of the community, as well as property owners associations and organizations so that they can individually be better prepared to help themselves, their families, loves ones and neighbors. This will be held from7:00 pm - 10:00 p.m.

This program is made possible by a CAPCOG Citizens Corps Grant Program/CERT which provides the funds for training equipment and supplies.

To register for this class, and get more information and the entire training schedule, go to the Burnet County CERT's website at www.burnetcountycert.org.
