MAYOR'S CORNER
I have been asked why I didn't write a "Mayor's Corner" article last week. My final draft is due by the time City Hall opens on Wednesday morning. I turned my Sept. 17 article in late Tuesday afternoon. Then on Wednesday, Sept. 17, I received a call at 1:40 AM to let me know my mother-in-law (Ethel Mae Raesener) had just passed away peacefully. Ethel Mae had just celebrated her 98th birthday on July 6th, 2014. She was the most positive person I've ever known - always looking for the bright side. At her memorial service this past Wednesday (9/24), there was a time for individuals to stand up and talk about Ethel Mae. There were so many hilarious and sweet and wonderful stories that Rev. Jon Weems finally skipped the rest of the planned service and just closed with the prayers. We all retired to the Fellowship Hall to celebrate Ethel Mae's wonderful life and tell more stories. I have been stopped every day by someone with another fond remembrance. I expect that to continue for quite some time...and I love it!

In 1977, Lee and Ethel Mae Raesener retired to their new home at 325 Meadowlakes Drive. Lee was on the MUD Board (1981-1991) and very active in the First Methodist Church until he passed away in 1992. They were so close - married since 1936 - that my daughter and I were worried that Ethel Mae would be lost without him...but...always the "little engine that could"...Ethel Mae continued to garden, knit and crochet, play bridge, have parties and enjoy life in Meadowlakes. When I retired in January of 2007, I moved here so Ethel Mae would have family nearby (both of my parents died in May of 1988). In June of 2008, she finally decided she couldn't get around well enough to live alone, so I helped her move into Gateway Villa. She always made life better and more entertaining for everyone around her, wherever she lived, no matter what life handed her. Truly, she will be missed by many!

PHONE SCAM ALERT

**RESIDENTS BEWARE**

THERE IS A TELEPHONE SCAM TARGETING THE MEADOWLAKES AND HIGHLAND HAVEN COMMUNITIES.  THE INDIVIDUALS ARE CALLING FROM THE MIDDLE EAST TELLING PEOPLE THAT THEIR GRANDSON IS IN TROUBLE AND HE NEEDS MONEY WIRED (WESTERN UNION) TO A CERTAIN NUMBER RIGHT AWAY OR FOR YOU TO PURCHASE GREENDOT MONEY CARD PACKS.  LOCAL GROCERY STORES HAVE WESTERN UNION AND ARE TELLING PEOPLE NOT TO WIRE MONEY BUT SOME OF THEM ARE DOING IT ANYWAY.  PLEASE DO NOT WIRE ANY MONEY OR PURCHASE GREENDOT MONEY CARD PACKS AND CONTACT THE LOCAL SHERIFF'S OFFICE IMMEDIATELY AT (512) 756-8080.

PASS THE WORD ONTO YOUR FAMILY, FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS.
WATERING RESTRICTION EASING
On September 9th, the Meadowlakes City Council Workshop, City Manager, Johnnie Thompson, reported that the citizens of Meadowlakes have done an exemplary job by meeting and exceeding the water savings targets.  Due to overwhelming response by the citizens, water usage has actually decreased by 38%.  As a result, effective immediately the City will be easing water restrictions to allow for one additional watering day per week.  The watering schedule is as follows:

Residential:

Odd number addresses: Wednesdays and Saturdays

Even number addresses: Thursdays and Sundays

Commercial: (including large landscapes) Tuesdays and Fridays

Watering Hours: Midnight to 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. to midnight.

An advantage in the twice-a-week watering is that it would reduce the wasting of water by minimizing the need and frequency of flushing fire hydrants.  The City has received several calls recently regarding the taste/odor issues with our potable water, which would normally require the flushing of the lines via use of a fire hydrant.

The City Council will review the water consumption again at its regular meeting on October 14th.

EMERGENCY TRAINING

REDUCE YOUR LOSSES IN A COMMUNITY DISASTER

In 95% of all emergencies, bystanders and everyday citizens provide the first immediate assistance on the scene. Without the proper training, how would you know what to do? You may not think you need to learn - but the moment an incident or disaster occurs - you will regret not having learned.

CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) is a training program that prepares you to help yourself, your family and your neighbors in the event of a disaster when emergency personnel may not be able to reach everyone right away.

Under the direction of local emergency responders, CERT teams help provide critical support by giving immediate assistance to victims, providing damage assessment information and helping to organize other volunteers at a disaster site.

Volunteers trained in CERT also offer a potential workforce value for performing duties such as shelter support, crowd control and evacuation. The role of a CERT volunteer is to help others until trained emergency personnel arrive. Through this training, you will know better how to help yourself and those around you survive in the immediacy of the disaster.

On Thursday, April 23, 2015
the Burnet County Office of Emergency Management will begin holding a series of free CERT training classes for residents of the community, as well as property owners associations and organizations so that they can individually be better prepared to help themselves, their families, loves ones and neighbors. This will be held from7:00 pm - 10:00 p.m.

This program is made possible by a CAPCOG Citizens Corps Grant Program/CERT which provides the funds for training equipment and supplies.

To register for this class, and get more information and the entire training schedule, go to the Burnet County CERT's website at www.burnetcountycert.org.
