MAYOR'S CORNER

The PEC power outage this past Saturday evening caught all of us by surprise - especially how long it lasted. For future reference, if you have solar lights in your yard, you can bring them inside to light the room a bit - and putting them or a flashlight in front of a mirror doubles the light available. A side effect of the outage has been that pre-programmed lawn sprinklers - especially digital ones - may have been affected. Mine is really old so no problem for me, but I noticed several lawns being watered on the wrong days after the outage.

The City Council is spending a lot of time working with our City Manager to try to finalize a balanced budget for the fiscal year that will begin on October 1, 2015 (FY2015). The Public Facility Corporation (PFC) that oversees our Hidden Falls golf complex is struggling to overcome the challenge resulting from a declining number of members in our community. They've done a great job of getting the word out about our beautiful course and facilities (restaurant, pool, etc.), but the cost of operations continues to rise. We all know that having these facilities within our gates greatly enhances the value and desirability of our homes.

One plan involves less frequent mowing of the "rough" areas of the course - the areas from the edge of the fairways to the outer boundaries. Developing a "Resource Conservation Area" is an approach that has been taken by other courses in our area (for example, Lighthouse and Delaware Springs) and around Texas and the nation. Once our brief rainy season (March-June) is over, the grassy areas that are not watered essentially stop growing, anyway. Only the fairways and greens benefit from year-round watering using the City's treated wastewater (effluent) - and the City benefits by having a place to put it! The proposal includes regular mowing of a mower-width around the boundary and will include wider fairways, designed so that fewer balls actually land in the rough. The PFC estimates it can save $40,000 per year with this approach. There are maps available in the Hidden Falls Golf Pro Shop and at City Hall if you want to see which areas would be converted from turf to native areas if the Resource Conservation Area proposal is adopted.

ANIMAL CONTROL
white-dog-polaroid.jpg
Did you know??  There are ordinances concerning pets that most residents aren't aware of.  We have a "Short-List" of Animal Control Ordinances at City Hall that gives you a quick reference to the more relevant sections of the Meadowlakes Animal Control Ordinances.

A couple of issues have been brought to the City's attention.  These include:

1.)  All animals shall be kept under restraint from leaving a residence's lot line. If they leave the residence, they must be under restraint with a leash.

2.)  All dogs and cats must be registered at City Hall within 30 days of residency or acquisition of a new pet. A current rabies vaccination certificate and a one-time $10.00 licensing fee is required for each pet at the time of registration. City I.D. tags will be issued and worn by each animal. Thereafter, a current rabies vaccination certificate must be presented at City Hall upon expiration of their current shots. A $5.00 renewal fee will also be incurred. Once you no longer own the pet, please inform City Hall so that it may be purged from the City's files.
