The Dawn of System Leadership
Peter Senge et al, Stanford Social Innovation Review, Winter 2015
With the passing of Nelson Mandela in late 2013, the world celebrated a remarkable life. But the spotlight on Mandela's accomplishments relegated to the shadows much of the reason that he has had such a lasting impact, in South Africa and beyond. Above all, Mandela embodied a system leader, someone able to bring forth collective leadership. In countless ways, large and small, he undertook interventions

This Coach Improved Every Tiny Thing by 1 Percent and Here's What Happened
James Clear, James Clear blog, March 13, 2015
In 2010, Dave Brailsford faced a tough job. No British cyclist had ever won the Tour de France, but as the new General Manager and Performance Director for Team Sky (Great Britain's professional cycling team), Brailsford was asked to change that. His approach was simple. Brailsford believed in a concept that he referred to as the "aggregation of marginal gains." He explained it as "the 1 percent margin for improvement in everything you do."

Leaders: Are You as Good a Listener as You Think You Are?
Ken Blanchard, How We Lead blog, March 18, 2015
When I ask people to talk about the best boss they ever had, they always mention one quality-listening. The best leaders are good listeners. Our research shows that listening is a critical skill for developing people, building trust, and creating a meaningful connection. But be careful-we've also found that it's common for direct reports to score their managers lower in listening skills than the managers score themselves.

5 Tricks to Be More Powerful at Work
Jessica Stillman, Inc., April 13, 2015
"Power is a subject that makes many people extremely uncomfortable," Stanford professor Jeffrey Pfeffer argues, but just because we don't like to think about power doesn't mean it's not the lifeblood of business. Ignoring power, therefore, won't make it disappear any more than wishing away gravity will help you fly. Instead of sticking your head in the sand, Pfeffer suggests you get real and start thinking constructively about accumulating power.

Why Some Men Pretend to Work 80-Hour Weeks
Erin Reid
In many professional jobs, expectations that one be an "ideal worker"-fully devoted to and available for the job, with no personal responsibilities or interests that interfere with this commitment to work-are widespread. We often think of problems with these expectations as women's problems. But men too may struggle with them.

How to Refocus a Meeting After Someone Interrupts  |  Rebecca Knight
Whether it's a team member who disagrees with your approach, an employee from another department who brings up irrelevant information or a colleague who wants to use your meeting as a soapbox for his own personal agenda, dealing with interrupters during a meeting is challenging. "It's the workplace equivalent of having someone steal the parking spot you were aiming for or jumping ahead of you in the line at the grocery store," says Judith White, visiting associate professor at the Tuck School of Business. "When someone interrupts you, blocks you, or otherwise thwarts your intended action, it's natural to feel upset."

How to Quit Asking Bad Questions and Start Asking Great Questions
We all do it. We ask leading questions. Or we ask limiting questions. Or we ask questions that assume a certain answer. (Shoot, sometimes we don't even listen to the answers -- we're too busy presuming we're right.) Here are some ways people ask questions the wrong way -- and how you can ask the right way.

Time to Change the Rules of NegotiationAllison M. Vaillancourt
It is job-offer season, and lately I've received an inordinate number of inquiries related to "negotiating while female." In addition to the normal jitters that come with going back and forth on an offer, it seems lots of women have heard about the Nazareth College case and read the research that suggests they must play into gender stereotypes in order to secure competitive deals. For example, they have been told that they should make requests on behalf of others rather than themselves so as not to seem pushy or aggressive.

IT'S ONLY FAIR: At this store, women only have to pay 76 percent of what men do | Rob Wile
In Pennsylvania, women make just 76 percent of what men do. So one Pennsylvania artist thought it only fair that women should have to pay just 76 percent of what men pay when they go shopping. Sit down to a slice and enjoy this commentary on the Science Behind Why Jeff Bezos's Two-Pizza Team Rule Works

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos advocates the "two pizza rule" for team size. A group that needs more than two pizzas is too big, Bezos has asserted. Bezos thinks people communicate more effectively and productively in small groups, and get more done more quickly. In her management blog, Janet Choi describes some of the science behind this idea.
