December 2012

This past year has brought much exciting news and accomplishments for the International Center for Executive Leadership in Academics - the home of both the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine and the Executive Leadership in Academic Technology and Engineering programs.

In the past year, we've celebrated:

  • The launch of the new ELATE at Drexel program, with an inaugural class of 11 Fellows from some of the nation's top institutions. ELATE also celebrated receiving two programmatic grants, from the National Science Foundation and the Henry Luce Foundation, which both support important curricular modules in the ELATE Fellowship year. Also note that ELATE is now accepting applications for its 2013-2014 class through our online application, and applications are due January 3, so encourage a woman leader in your institution to apply today!

  • Two grants aimed at supporting ICELA's research and career development initiatives. A grant from the Sloan Foundation has supported further development and refinement of our program evaluation processes, including the creation of new program evaluation web pages designed to share our processes and results. A grant from the National Institutes of Health awarded back in 2009, has continuously supported research evaluating barriers to success for women in academic medicine, and recently resulted in an article published in the Journal of Women's Health, Systems of Career Influences: A Conceptual Model for Evaluating the Professional Development of Women in Academic Medicine.

  • ELAM's continuing to "pay it forward" with an expanding and developing alumnae (ELUM) community. This year's ELAM@AAMC annual tea, sponsored by Stanford University School of Medicine, had more than 80 ELUMs in attendance. We're also looking forward to joining 25 ELUMs in San Antonio at the ELAM Texas and Regional Alumnae Event coming up in January. We're also always celebrating the efforts that so many of our ELUMs make in peer mentoring and helping to bring other women along the path of leadership.
  •

We realize that we couldn't accomplish so much without the help of so many.

We extend our special thanks to:

  • Our Institute for Women's Health and Leadership®  Director and Betty A. Cohen Chair in Women's Health Lynn Yeakel and Chancellor Emeritus (and ELAM Founder) D. Walter Cohen for their efforts to promote women leaders at every level .

  • The nearly 100 ELAM and ELATE 2012-2013 faculty and facilitators, including our Learning Community Advisers, for helping to enrich the experience and learning of this year's Fellows.

  • The members of our national Admissions Committees, who play such an important role in our ongoing work, ensuring that we maintain the highest standards in the selection of annual classes.

  • The 65+ medical, dental and public health schools and their Deans who joined as ELAM Academic Sustaining Members committed to supporting and sustaining the advancement of women at their institutions. Visit our website for more information on Sustaining Membership.

  • Our former and current ELAM and ELATE Fellows, whose experiences, perspectives and contributions have enriched our programs in immeasurable ways. We look forward to celebrating your new accomplishments over the coming year.

  • The co-sponsors of the 2012 ELAM Leaders Forum and Poster Symposium: Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center; University of Cincinnati College of Medicine; Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine and their leadership.

  • The special friends who sponsored ELUM gatherings, curricular modules, and the annual Fellows & Faculty Directory: The Alumnae/i Association of Woman's Medical College/Medical College of Pennsylvania Trust Fund, the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and executive search firms Witt/Kieffer and Spencer Stuart.

  • The inaugural members of our Executive Development Council: Institutional members Witt/Kieffer, ZurickDavis, and Spencer Stuart; and individual members Judith Katz and David Bachrach.

  • Our many generous contributors who make our continuing success possible and enable us to provide ongoing career support for ELAM and ELATE alumnae to prepare them for professional opportunities and help them to find their own leadership capacities.

  • Our colleagues at Drexel University - President John A. Fry and Provost Mark L. Greenberg, Annenberg Dean and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs Daniel V. Schidlow; Communications, Continuing Medical Education, Finance, Information Technology, Institutional Advancement, Legal, Printing and Mailing, and Purchasing - who all provide support and help to keep us moving forward.
