Dear Alumni,
As the season's first flowers begin to emerge, the impending burst of colour always puts a little extra (excuse the pun) spring in my step. However, while I eagerly await those first few hints of purple and yellow, it is the colour pink that really gets my attention this month. That's because, on February 27, we will celebrate Anti-Bullying Day (a.k.a. Pink Shirt Day) -- an important event that symbolizes that our society does not tolerate bullying.
The event originally started as a protest against a bullying incident in Nova Scotia where a male student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt during the first day of school. But as many of us have witnessed or experienced, bullying is not relegated to the high-school hallways or playground. It can extend into the workplace, causing work-related stress, ill-health and depression in one in 10 employees.

CMA Info Session
Monday, February 25, 2013 from 6:00 to 7:00pm @ KPU Richmond Campus.
CMA BC is hosting an info session for all alumni who may be interested in pursuing a CMA designation. As a Kwantlen Alumni, you may have completed most if not all of the perquisites to enter the CMA Strategic Leadership Program. This hour long info session will provide details about the CMA designation and the prerequisites required to enter. There will be a 30-40 minute presentation followed by a 20-30 minute question and answer session. Food and refreshments will be served. RSVP required.

Butt Out Bullying in the Workplace

Have you ever wondered what happened to that elementary school bully who used to pull your hair and call you names? How about the high school bully who spread malicious rumours about you to your classmates? While they have since 'grown' and are possibly raising a child or two of their own, it doesn't mean they've stopped causing emotional turmoil to those around them. Instead of wreaking havoc in the school yard, they're now causing conflict in a new setting - the workforce. While a schoolyard bully can be easy to pinpoint, a bully at work often slips under the radar, according to Erica Pinsky, a respectful workplace solutions expert. "It is rarely about overt physical violence or threats, public taunting, yelling or screaming," said Pinsky, who works with clients to eliminate discrimination, harassment, bullying and destructive conflict in the workplace. KPU alumna and former faculty member head to Ottawa to present at the 2013 CPRS National Conference
Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) alumna and former faculty member Amelia Kennedy has had her proposal surrounding her dissertation research accepted from over 50 submissions for the 2013 Canadian Public Relations Society's (CPRS) National Conference.
