Jeff Norris

Dear Alumni,
Thank you to all who attended last night's KPUAA annual general meeting at Kwantlen's Surrey campus. It was an exciting night as, in addition to greetings from Dr. Alan Davis, KPU's new president; it included the announcement of the KPUAA Board of Directors election results.
As executive director of KPUAA since 2008, I am thrilled to have the honour of welcoming our newest directors: Lindsay Civitarese, Brandy Dudas, Brandon Hastings, and Debbie Langtry. Each of these volunteers brings a unique skill set and a strong commitment to their fellow alumni, the university and the community. A congratulation also goes out to our returning elected board members: Kristan Ash, Harpreet Bains, Kelsey Filion, and David Shapendonk.
I would also like to recognize the hard work and dedication of our outgoing board members: Marc Bains and Careena Sharma. While working diligently on specific alumni initiatives throughout their terms, they have been instrumental in helping to move the KPUAA mission forward. Their commitment has led to growth in all areas of KPUAA, including a marked increase in communications and alumni engagement. Alumni engagement is very important because, as ambassadors of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, alumni play an important role in addressing matters and issues that affect the university and the community, as well as raising awareness about the value of a higher education and the reputation of our institution. From all of us at KPUAA, thank you for your many hours of service and dedication to your fellow alumni and alma mater.
With the annual general meeting and elections now behind us, we can start focusing on the year ahead.
Best wishes,
Jeff Norris
Executive Director

Soft Skills - Why they are so important in today's job market
By Sandy Chernoff, Soft Skills Consultant at Soft Skills for Success
 | | Sandy Chernoff |
In this uncertain economy, businesses are very careful about how they spend their dollars. If looking for new hires, they are likely find many potential candidates who share similar educational backgrounds and levels of work experience. So how will they choose the right candidate from 20 viable resumes? Who will be the one most valuable to their organization?
Their choice is usually the individual with the best "soft skills ." That does not mean that technical and professional skills are not key - they are. However, soft skills are very individual and unique. Because of this, they can really help a job seeker or employee stand out from a crowd. MORE

In November each year, we take pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by soldiers who have put themselves at the front lines of global conflict. As the years pass, one is struck by how the rows of Vets attending Remembrance Day ceremonies look so different these days. Where once the men and women stood, many now hunch over walkers or sit in motorized scooters and wheelchairs. Not all of our parents are war veterans...MORE |
