Introducing the Fort Wayne Mastodons

Director of Athletics Kelley Hartley Hutton has announced the immediate implementation of Fort Wayne as the brand name for IPFW Athletics. This transition only affects IPFW Athletics branding efforts. The university's IPFW academic brand remains unchanged.

In 2012, The Summit League Council of Presidents Strategic Framework outlined a plan to promote metropolitan campuses with their geographic names in order to build local identification and visibility for their communities. Since that time, The Summit League office and its member institutions have referred to IPFW Athletics as Fort Wayne in schedules, rankings, broadcasts, etc. Read the news release Frequently Asked Questions [PDF]

Be Ready for Phishing Emails

With the start of the school year you can expect to see more phishing emails. Fortunately, there are clues that a message is an attack. Here are the most common:
  • The email creates a sense of urgency, demanding "immediate action" before something bad happens.
  • There is an attachment that you weren't expecting, or the text entices you to open the attachment
  • The email uses a generic salutation, such as "Dear Customer" instead of your name
  • Highly sensitive information is requested, such as your credit card number or password
  • The email claims to be from an official organization but uses poor grammar or spelling, or uses a personal email address such as @gmail.com.
  • The link looks odd or unofficial. If you hover your mouse cursor over the link, a pop-up will show you the URL. If the link doesn't match the pop-up destination, don't click it.
  • You receive a message from someone you know but the tone or wording sounds suspicious. Call the sender to verify. It's easy for a cyber-criminal to create a phony email address.
Common sense is your best defense. If you believe a message is a phishing attack, forward it to the IT Services Help Desk or simply delete it.
