IPFW New Student Orientation (formerly SOAR) is ready to take on its new identity this summer. In an effort to provide incoming IPFW students with a more personalized and detailed advising session, a deeper understanding of their academic departments, and an increased connection to their major's peers, orientation has been re-formatted. Purdue President Daniels at IPFW
Purdue University President Mitch Daniels will visit the IPFW campus tomorrow, January 31. Daniels, along with IPFW Chancellor Vicky Carwein, will meet with groups of students, faculty, and administrators in the morning. An open forum will be held in the Rhinehart Recital Hall from 11:45 a.m. to 12:25 p.m.
The forum is open to all IPFW students, staff, and faculty; however, seating is limited and will be on a first-come, first-seated basis. Doors to the recital hall will open at 11:15 a.m. CATV will videotape the open forum and will replay it Friday, February 1, at 3 and 8 p.m.; Saturday, February 2, at 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.; and Sunday, February 3 at 6 and 11 p.m. CATV can be seen on Comcast channel 5 and FiOS channel 30.

IPFW Celebrates Black History Month
IPFW will begin its celebration of Black History Month with the Black Collegian Caucus' Kickoff Celebration, Thursday, January 31, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Walb Student Union Ballroom. The event will include music by DJ Rello, performances by IPFW students, food from Slim's Barbeque (formerly known as Brooks Barbeque), and more. The kickoff is free and open to the public. Fred the Mastodon Finds an Official Home

Sometime in the distant past a mastodon died in a pond off what is now Cook Road in Allen County. Fast-forward 13,000 years. Dan Buesching was digging up peat in that pond and discovered a cache of mastodon bones. IPFW students soon joined in the excavation, and in the end it turned out Buesching's find was one of the most complete mastodon skeletons ever found in this part of the country. The skeleton of the mastodon, now named Fred, has finally found a permanent home in the Indiana State Museum. Read the story ...
