Walk n' Roll to school in Tumwatertop

Members of the community joined parents, staff and children on a walk to Peter G. Schmidt Elementary School on October 9 to celebrate International Walk to School Day (see photo above). Tumwater Police escorted the large group along the route. Walk to school events encourage students to explore walking and biking to school rather than driving or being driven. The Walk n' Roll program encourages and supports the next generation of safe and healthy bikers, walkers, and bus riders.

Intercity Transit's Smart Moves youth education program, in partnership with the Thurston Regional Planning Council (TRPC), coordinates several of these walks each month with schools in Tumwater and Olympia. Funding for the program comes from Washington State Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to Schools grant program and Transportation Alternatives Program funds.

Upcoming events, often referred to as "Walking & Wheeling Wednesdays," are planned for the participating Tumwater elementary schools of Michael T. Simmons and Peter G. Schmidt.

  • October 23, Michael T Simmons
  • November 6, Peter G Schmidt
  • November 20, Michael T Simmons
  • December 4 Peter G Schmidt

Additional dates will be scheduled in 2014.

Got bikes? bikes

Need to rehome a bicycle? Bike PARTners needs donated bicycles (especially bikes with 24" and 26" wheels). The Bike PARTners program provides after-school workshops for students to learn bike maintenance and safe riding skills, one-on-one from volunteer instructors, and eventually earn their own bike. Contact Erin Scheel at (360) 705-5839 or [email protected] for more information.

Help keep storm drains clear drains

Autumn leaves are falling! Please do not rake or blow leaves from your yard into the street. Raking or blowing leaves into storm drains can clog drains and cause flooding in your neighborhood, and it's against the law (see TMC 13.12.020).

Tumwater maintenance crews work hard to sweep our streets and vacuum out our storm drains. You can give them a helping hand by regularly removing leaves and trash from the storm drains in your neighborhood.

Try Composting Leaves
For a healthy yard, leaves may be placed in garden beds to protect plants over the winter. Decomposing leaves also add nutrients to soil. Do remove large leaves from lawn areas. Leaves may be placed in yard waste bins or composted.

An easy way to compost leaves is to place them in a large trash bag with a shovel full of soil. Shredding large leaves with a mower will aid decomposition. Tie the bag closed and poke some holes in it for aeration. Hide the bag outside or in your shed for the winter. Next spring, open the bag up for some great mulch for your yard!

Join the Great Washington Shake Outdrill

On October 17 at 10:17 a.m., join City employees and people from around the state and around the world in an earthquake drill during the Great Washington Shake Out. Participating is a great way for families and organizations to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes. The drill provides a reminder to take action to prepare and an opportunity to practice earthquake response.

Safety Tips:

Take action before an earthquake to minimize the impact. Unsecured bookcases, tall furniture, mirrors, wall hangings, and other items could fall over or break during an earthquake and cause injury. Secure the contents of your home to protect yourself and your loved ones.

The best method to protect yourself during an earthquake is to Drop, Cover and Hold. Be sure to practice taking cover in a safe place in each room. This will help you quickly move to your safe place during an earthquake instead of responding to the instinctive urge to run. Find recommended earthquake safety actions online.

Be ready to respond after an earthquake by dressing for safety. Protect your head, feet and hands. Have a pair of sturdy shoes, leather gloves and a hard hat under your bed so you know where to get the essentials, day or night. To participate, register on the Great Washington Shake Out website. You can also find resources for your home, business and organization there.
