gavelTumwater Contracts with County for
Court Services

Thurston County District Court and the City of Tumwater have reached agreement for provision of municipal court services for the City. The interlocal agreement was reached after about a year of discussions. Under the agreement, District Court will handle all misdemeanor cases and those infractions that require investigation and mitigation. The City will still handle payment of traffic infractions and minor violations.

The new model for municipal court services provided the most economical solution with the best service to court customers. The contract allows for improved security, increased staffing and efficiency, improved prosecution and public defense, access to the County's therapeutic courts, and access to video arraignment.

The change will save the City the cost of providing additional judicial and clerk time, acquisition of additional space, and creation of court holding cells. Based on current cases, City staff calculated $167,000 annual savings to taxpayers by contracting court services, compared to the cost to implement the changes necessary to meet the minimum standards for facility safety, public defense services, and prosecution. The cost of contracted services is proportional to the volume and type of cases heard in District Court. Monies and fees collected through the court system will help pay for the contracted services. The transition will take effect on August 1, 2013.

 New Fireworks Regulations in Tumwater

fireworks  Discharge of personal fireworks permitted in Tumwater on
  JULY 3rd and 4th
  3 - 11 p.m. ONLY.

Celebrate Independence Day in a safe and enjoyable manner that is within the law. In 2012, the Tumwater City Council amended the Fireworks ordinance (TMC 8.30) to reduce the timeframe allowed to discharge fireworks and to reduce the number of fireworks stands permitted within the City. These changes will go into effect this holiday season.

  • Ignition/discharge of safe and sane fireworks are allowed within the City of Tumwater on July 3 and 4, between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. only.
  • A Safe Patrol (police and fire staff) will enforce the new regulations during the holiday season. Violators can be charged with a misdemeanor and fined up to $1,000.
  • Professional displays are unaffected by the ordinance and require a special permit.

Visit the Washington State Patrol website for great resources on fireworks safety and injury prevention.

   South Sound Manor,
   455 North Street SE,
   Tumwater, WA 98501

The City of Tumwater and Thurston Regional Planning Council invite you to attend the second of three open houses to learn about the Tumwater Brewery District and help shape its future. This second meeting will review the District Vision and Goals package and discuss several land use and mobility scenarios that were crafted from the first public meeting.

The Tumwater Brewery District Planning Project will examine the character and potential of the 300-acre district surrounding the historic Tumwater brewery. Building on the 2011 visioning project for the former brewery, the City will work with land owners, businesses, residents and other stakeholders to develop a long-range vision for the District, and an action plan for bringing that vision to life in the coming years.

Visit the Brewery District Planning Project website to learn more about the project, or contact Tim Smith, Planning Manager, (360) 754-4212.
