Tumwater On Tap
December 2012 - Year End Edition |
|
A Year of Many Accomplishments
As the year draws to a close, I would like to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for the many people that make our city such a great place to live, work, and play.
We have much to celebrate this year. Through partnerships with community volunteers, we planted trees and enhanced our parks. The Littlerock Road construction was completed. Our citizens were engaged. Together, we began to develop a vision for the heart and soul of our city-Capitol Boulevard and the Brewery. The list goes on! Please take a few minutes to read the 2012 Highlights (below) for more accomplishments.
Wow! We've done a lot and there is a lot more to look forward to next year. I am proud to serve in a community with such a rich history, committed citizens and staff, and a vibrant future.
I'd also like to extend a special thank you to the 17th Fires Brigade, Tumwater's Community Connector unit at JBLM, and all our military families for their ongoing service to our country.
Thanks for your continuing support!
Mayor Pete Kmet |

2012 Highlights The City of Tumwater celebrated many successes this year. Notable accomplishments include: - Response to extreme snow and ice conditions, and a recovery that continues.
- Followed through on commitments under the voter approved public safety levy lid lift and other agreements to improve public safety by hiring six new firefighters, one paramedic, and two police officers, purchasing a new fire truck, and completing the design of a police station expansion at City Hall.
- Worked with the 17th Fires Brigade from JBLM to build a new picnic shelter at Pioneer Park.
- Continued improvements at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course and initiated the design of a bike and pedestrian trail through the valley that will make this property an asset for generations.
- Completed Littlerock Road construction, a project that was many years in the making.
- Engaged our community through the first "Tumwater University," by obtaining valuable feedback from our citizens through community surveys, and working with volunteers to enhance and maintain our community.
- Conducted a community visioning process for Capitol Boulevard to reenergize this business district, move people and goods more efficiently, and make it more attractive as our "main street."
- Took steps to protect our shorelines and water quality, and enhance our water supply.
- Continued collaboration with the owners of the Brewery and community partners to position these properties for future redevelopment.

School Resource Officer Program Returns
The Tumwater Police Department and Tumwater School District will reengage in a partnership, beginning January 2013, to provide a School Resource Officer (SRO) in the district's high schools. It has been nearly ten years (since 2002) that the city has had an officer in the community's high schools. The new officer will split time between Tumwater High School and Black Hills High School.
School Resource Officers help bring a feeling of safety and security to a school. The program allows the police department to engage with kids in a positive manner to build trust and mutual understanding. Officers in schools can focus on prevention, mentorship, and education.
Tumwater Police Officer Chuck Liska, a fifteen year police veteran (seven of those years in Tumwater), is looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity as the department's new School Resource Officer. As a former SRO for a high school in Federal Way, he knows first-hand the benefits of building proactive relationships within the schools.
The SRO Program is funded by the 2011 Public Safety Initiative which provides for one full-time officer, a vehicle, and associated equipment. Download the Promises Made-Promises Kept flyer from the city's website for more information on the initiative. |

Are You Prepared for Winter Weather?
Snow, ice, and high winds may become more common as the winter season progresses. Please take some time to prepare your home and family for adverse weather conditions.
- As with any emergency, (at minimum) have a three-day supply of food, water, and medication for yourself, family members, and pets.
- When power outages and cold weather arrives, check on your neighbors- especially elderly or shut-in neighbors.
- If physically possible, clean the storm drains near your home to keep the water from melting snow flowing.
- Keep a snow shovel and a container of sand in the trunk of your car, garage, and home.
- Clear the sidewalk in front of your home or business.
- Only drive if it's essential, or take the bus if you must go somewhere. For bus schedule and route information in snow conditions, visit the Intercity Transit website.
- Do not drive around road closed signs - the road is closed for your safety.
- Expect and be prepared for power outages. Heavy snow could knock down trees and power lines.
City of Tumwater Public Works crews operate snow removal and deicer equipment to provide 24-hour coverage when the need arises. City crews focus on lifeline roads for fire, police, and public transit use. Browse to the city's website for a map and information on priority snow removal routes. |
