About Your Course - by Course Superintendent Bob Volpe
Bob Volpe's Service Truck
Its been a very busy 8 weeks here at Palmira, including 2.25" of rain last week. All three nines have had their first round of aerification done, the front of the clubhouse had a major landscape renovation project completed, the Egret course has had 56 trees planted and we are now beginning the improvements on several of the lake banks with aquatic plant materials.

We will be moving into our second round of aerification beginning right after the fourth of July.  Our goal is to remove 20-25% organic matter in the greens.  This keeps the greens breathing and accepting oxygen throughout the summer.  This is important for the life of the greens.  Without aerification, the greens would seal up, lose oxygen and die.

We have increased the collar and approach areas on several holes, namely, Ibis 6 and 8, Egret 2 and 3.  These new areas are a brown color and will green up within the next ten days.  This gives the golfer a more improved playability lie immediately around the green.

Those new trees on Egret are in my way.  Can I take relief?
USGA Logo Many new trees have been planted on the Egret course.  Rule 24-2 of the USGA Rules of Golf allows for free relief from an "obstruction," defined as "anything artificial, including the artificial surfaces and sides of roads and paths and manufactured ice" with some exceptions.

If any part of the players stance or swing is interfered with by the stakes, or wells, that are dug out around the tree, proceed with a free drop as described in Rule 24-2b.   A common mistake is that a player will take relief because the tree is in his/her line of play.  This does not qualify for free relief.

For the month of July, we will be serving fresh steamed Maine Lobster for our Friday night special.  The prime rib has been a huge success; we believe you will enjoy the lobsters as well.  The lobsters will be served with corn on the cob, red bliss potatoes, and drawn butter.

Lobster If you will be joining us for dinner and would like a lobster, please note this on your reservation.  We will order extras of course but, I want to be sure everyone that wants a lobster is able to have one or two.

We appreciate all your input on the variety of food served in your Grill Room. Some new items this month include Oysters Rockefeller, Shrimp and Crab Melt, Pan Seared Pompano, Soft Shell Crab and much more. We look forward to your feedback.

Wine Club News

Dear Members,

This week I am pleased to offer two very special wines!

Cantina Liseddi, Vermentino Superiore di Gallura Lagrimedda DOCG (Sardinia)
With only 500 cases produced, Florida is the only state in the US that has access to this wine and only through our distributor! This white wine is medium-bodied with a lightness to it which is refreshing, showing lovely citrus and minerality on the palate. A dry white crying out for deep fried squid, natural oysters, and fish and chips, but pairs well with a range of fresh fish and shellfish. Normally $20 per bottle, for a short time available for only $13/bottle!

Auteur Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast)
With only 362 cases made, this is an extremely limited wine with 92 Points from Wine Spectator and 91 Points from Robert Parker. The Winemaker Kenneth Juhasz creates his wines in a more Burgundian Old World Style with a new twist. The balance depth and complexity of the old world combined with the richness and intensity of the new. This Pinot Noir has alluring and vibrant aromas of black cherry and cardamom with savory garrigue undertones. Pairs with a variety of dishes from poached salmon to a rich braised duck. Normally $49/ bottle now available for only $39.60/bottle.

Please email me at ablanco@golfclubatpalmira.org if you are interested in either or both of these fabulous wines!

Cheers,

Angel
