About Your Course - by Course Superintendent Bob Volpe
|

These last two weeks have been exciting. We completed the landscape renovations at the clubhouse and planted 56 trees on the Egret course. The trees are a variety of species: Sabel Palms, Royal Palms, Southern Magnolias, Foxtail Palms and Pink Tabebuias. These trees were planted on 6 of the 9 Egret holes. We also completed a landscape addition of colorful shrubs and groundcovers on the rock walls along Egret 2 tee boxes. We are planning on some more landscape additions on Egret within the next few weeks, primarily adding plants where we have lost some of the original plant material.
The recent early-morning rains have slowed down the cleanup process of Osprey's aerification. When it rains off-and-on all day, the grass never dries and it needs to be dry for the cleanup. Hopefully, the rain this week will come later in the afternoons. We received 2.87' of rain between the 12th and the 18th, coming down in the morning and lingered on during the day.
We will be planting many aquatic plants on a number of lake banks on Egret within the next two weeks.
|
Those new trees on Egret are in my way. Can I take relief?
|
Many new trees have been planted on the Egret course. Rule 24-2 of the USGA Rules of Golf allows for free relief from an "obstruction," defined as "anything artificial, including the artificial surfaces and sides of roads and paths and manufactured ice" with some exceptions.
If any part of the players stance or swing is interfered with by the stakes, or wells, that are dug out around the tree, proceed with a free drop as described in Rule 24-2b. A common mistake is that a player will take relief because the tree is in his/her line of play. This does not qualify for free relief.

"Woody" Chicken? Not at Palmira!
Chicken is so popular now that producers have been breeding them to grow larger and faster but also to have more breast meat. According to a recent article, today's broiler chickens now have breast fillets that are "heavier than the entire bird just a few decades ago'. If you've ever eaten a boneless chicken breast that was harder to chew and much more elastic than you'd expect, it is likely it has this woody breast condition. Another way the meat is described is "gummy". These affected birds are "laced with hard fibers" that are not dangerous for consumption, they just make the chicken breast more difficult to eat and less tasty. According to one of the experts quoted in the article, only 5% to 10% of boneless chicken breast fillets sold in the world are affected. Here at Palmira, we have not received any of this chicken. The problem seems to be not from how large they are growing chickens today, although I think that is a problem in itself, but how fast they are growing them. From 50 days to 7.7 days to grow a pound: that is way too fast.
The poultry industry is concerned - and they should be. Turns out one producer started getting complaints from their restaurant and retail customers about woody breasts and now have their workers test every piece of boneless skinless breasts for what feels like knots in the meat. If they find these knots, the breast meat is pulled from the line and "sold at a discount and then further processed or ground" for other uses. The real problem is they don't really know what's causing this "woody breast" condition. Is it how large the chickens are getting? How fast they are growing? Nutrition? Hen-house conditions? Breeds or lack of diversity in breeding?
I guess we have to hope the industry figures out why this is happening and does the right thing to fix it. I would encourage anyone who buys chicken breasts at their local market and comes across these conditions to report it to the store where they bought it and request a refund. Not fun to do, but it may get the markets to push back on the producers. You can also try buying meat from local farmers at your farmer's markets. Free range birds should not have the same conditions as the mass produced chickens you purchase at the supermarket.
