#HealthyAir Tweetfest
OSU SRP once again spearheaded a healthy air focused week on Twitter in support of EPA's Air Quality Awareness Week from April 29 - May 3, 2013.
25 centers/individuals participated with a total of 138 tweets. The goals were to:
- Build relationships with stakeholders
- Promote our research and activities
- Expand our social network

OSU and LSU SRP Centers co-sponsored the Jan. 29th Symposium and Workshop: Response, Recovery, and Resilience to Oil Spills and Environmental Disasters: Engaging Experts and Communities.
Dr. Kim Anderson, Dr. Anna Harding, and graduate students Lane Tidwell and Steven O'Connell participated from our Center. The event brought together community stakeholders, researchers, and policymakers. The focus was on enhancing communication between experts and citizens, and encouraged effective monitoring and sharing of information concerning local environmental conditions following disasters.

Leah Chibwe, working in Dr. Staci Simonich's lab, has received a 2013 KC Donnelly Externship Award from NIEHS to conduct research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) with Dr. Michael Aitken.
Leah is from Zambia and completing her second year as a doctoral student in Chemistry. Her research focuses on predicting and measuring the degradation of by-products from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at Superfund sites. This work utilizes state-of-the-art analytical chemistry including Comprehensive 2-Dimensional Gas Chromatography coupled to Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (GCxGC/ToF-MS).

Erin Madeen, working in Dr. Dave William's lab, received a Regulatory and Safety Evaluation Specialty Section (RSESS) Travel Award to go to the 2013 annual SOT meeting last March. The poster she presented was entitled, "In Vivo human pharmacokinetics of dibenzo[def,p]chrysene (DBC) following microdosing. Bridging the gap between high dose animal data and environmentally relevant human exposures". Erin also won the Diversity Advancement Pipeline Fellowship from the OSU Provost's office.
Oleksii Motorykin, working in Dr. Staci Simonich's lab, conducted the first study that linked lung cancer deaths to PAH emissions that pollute the air, independent of cigarette smoke.

The published paper was a collaboration with the Statistics and Bioinformatics Core at PNNL.
As a result of his hard work and discoveries, Oleksii received two prestigious awards from the Division of Environmental Chemistry of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in 2013: a Graduate Student Award in Environmental Chemistry and a Graduate Student Paper Award. Oleksii has also won the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Environmental Health in Atlanta for the summer of 2013.

Andy Larkin, working in Dr. Dave William's and Dr. Bill Baird's lab, won 2nd place in the Scholars' Insights competition in which 32 graduate students shared their research to the public in 3-minutes with one slide. Andy shared his experience on the Linus Pauling Institute blog, "Take a Deep Breath: LPI Student Winner Communicates about Science". View the video on YouTube.
Andy also presented a poster at SOT 2013 on this project entitled, "Smartphone technologies coupled with environmental models allow for large scale community outreach and risk assessment". More recently Andy received a Travel Award of $1000 to present about his project at the 13th International Congress on Combustion By-Products and Their Health Effects in New Orleans, LA from May 15 -18.
Andres Cardenas, working with Dr. Anna Harding and the Community Engagement Core, received the Ava Milam Clark Fellowship which is awarded to an outstanding OSU international graduate student. While working on his PhD, he has also been the primary instructor for the introductory course in Epidemiology and Biostatistics in Public Health.

Britton Goodale, working in Robert Tanguay's Lab, received the 2013 Women's Center Student award. She was recognized for her PAH research contributions and publications. She has taken on leadership roles and is a trusted and dependable student worker in the Tanguay lab.
