When asked what would you tell a relative or a friend about OPTC if he/she asked you for a recommendation, Myra had the following to say;

"I would tell them that OPTC would help them feel better faster, and with a smile.  All of the people at the Red Bank office were great.  From the front desk to the aids and students, they made everything so easy and took very good care of me.  Very professional and knowledgeable."

Oxford Physical Therapy Centers News

Greetings!

Hello from Oxford Physical Therapy Centers!

This month's newsletter features the staff at our Hyde Park/Red Bank Center, located at 4408 Red Bank Expressway, Cincinnati, OH 45227.

We have also included information about one of our partners, Health Style Fitness (HSF).  HSF is best known for their Adventure Bootcamp Series in the Cincinnati area, but they also have so much more to offer.  Read below to learn more about HSF.

Are you stretching your legs and arms correctly?  Do you know how long to hold a stretch for?  One of the most common ways that people get injured is from not properly stretching.  Below are tips on how to properly stretch to avoid injuries.

Alison Konerman, PT, DPT, ATC, AT, is the new manager at our Hyde Park/Red Bank Center!  Alison went to the University of Toledo for her undergraduate degree in Athletic Training and then to the University of Pittsburgh for her doctorate in Physical Therapy.  Alison enjoys treating all types of patients, but she especially enjoys using Kinesio Tape when she can!  For more information about Kinesio Tape, click here.

Ryan Nixon, PTA, works with Alison at our Hyde Park/Red Bank Center.  Ryan went to the University of Cincinnati to become a Physical Therapist Assistant!  Ryan loves helping all patients and he has said the following about being a PTA, "After requiring physical therapy myself for an athletic injury in high school, I realized my interest in pursuing this as my career path. I enjoy getting to know my patients and being a part of the process to get people back to feeling better.  Ultimately my goal is to help my patients get back to what they want to do.  I strive to find ways to help them get there!"

The front desk staff at our Hyde Park/Red Bank Center includes Stephanie and Leslie.  The Hyde Park/Red Bank Center also has PT Aides: Chris, Mike, Kelly, Katie and Spencer, who help Alison and Ryan with patient care.

Health Style Fitness

We have been partnering with Health Style Fitness to provide injury screens for many of their Adventure Boot Camps for a few years now, so we asked our friends at Health Style Fitness to talk about their boot camps and the relationship that we have.  The information below was provided by HSF.

Oxford is working under the stars....when they join Brian Calkins, owner and designer of Adventure Boot Camp for Women, to provide free injury screens at his early morning workout program. "Oxford is a trusted resource for us, and provides the expertise, professionalism, and convenience to keep our boot campers healthy and injury free. If a camper comes to me with a new or nagging injury, I immediately refer her to Oxford. We receive very positive feedback on the care, recommendations, and guidance they receive at Oxford. We truly value our partnership", says Brian.

While it may be Oxford's earliest screen time (the workout starts at 5:30am) they always arrive to an engaged, energetic environment.  That's why the women love it - it's a community of hard work and support. The workouts constantly change and maintain a structure that is proven to provide fast, long-lasting results.

Brian's philosophy? "I believe that EVERY WOMAN should be healthy and fit.  I believe that fitness should be FUN and INSPIRING.  And I believe that in order to improve your fitness and health, ALL YOU HAVE to do is just a little bit more than what you're accustomed to doing, regardless of your AGE, SHAPE, SIZE or current ABILITY. "

That is exactly what he gets women to do every morning, bright and early....and they finish their workout before the sun comes up.

Brian has a tireless passion for helping people master their own health and fitness, and improve their energy and vitality. Brian's approach has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, and he has been named one of the "TOP Fitness Experts in the Country".

Having helped over 5,000 women in Cincinnati, Brian knows what works, how to motivate, and what challenges women face (work and family obligations, stress, limited time, etc.) He knows women are busy, and his program allows them to get their workout in and out of the way before the rest of the world needs them. His campers are thrilled with the results:

"Working out at 5:30 am is ideal; my lil guy and hubby don't need me at that time, the routine is constantly changing and always challenging. The team spirit and camaraderie of the Boot Campers is awesome! I am still amazed to see that 3-4 hrs at Adventure Boot Camp can equate to 15hrs at the gym! But they do.. they only thing I can think of.. is that the workout are so well designed to make them efficient/effective! I have maintained my fitness level investing only 1/5 th of the time I used to spend at the gym.. this allows me to enjoy the rest of the time with my lil guy/hubby."- Nayeli

How To Properly Stretch

We have all done it before - skipped our stretching to get to the more "important part of the workout".  But saving a few minutes here and there by nixing the stretches may just end up causing damage and costing you hours of rehab in the long run.  So why is proper stretching one of the key elements necessary to avoid injury?

Our bodies function best when our muscles are flexible and "warmed up."  Stretching is one way to help increase the blood flow to active areas and decrease tissue stiffness.  This will also allow one's joints to move through the full range of motion which will cut down on increased wear and tear on the joint surface and overuse of tendons.  It also helps to decrease muscle soreness and can improve one's performance with your chosen activity. When stretching, there are a few things to remember:

  • Do not bounce - slow, controlled motion through a range is okay.
  • Streching should not be painful!  You should only feel a gentle tension with the stretch.
  • Always protect your spine.
  • Maintain 30-60 second holds and repeat the stretch several times.
  • Make sure you stretch the following groups: hip flexors, piriformis (posterior hip/buttock region), hamstrings, quadriceps, groin muscles, ITBand, calf muscles, chest, biceps, and triceps.
  • While it can be argued both ways, most research supports stretching briefly after doing a light warm-up and definitely after finishing a work out to receive the most benefits.

Keep in mind, stretching is not a guarantee you will never develop an injury.  If you begin to develop pain that lasts longer than one week and is not consistent with an increase in your activity level, is sharp and localized to a specific area, or appears to radiate down your arm and leg, seek advice from a physician or physical therapist.

As a reminder, we are at many running and walking events during the calendar year.  We are on-site to stretch participants typically before and after the race.  Look out for our tent on race day and stop by for a stretch!

As always, we are here to help you maintain your active lifestyle.  All of our centers offer free injury screens.  If you or someone you know are not feeling 100% we would welcome the opportunity to meet with you.

Best,

The Oxford Physical Therapy Family
