Music Garden Phase of RiverEdge Park
Nears Completion . . .
Dunham Fund Supports Inaugural Season

The Music Garden phase of the City of Aurora's RiverEdge Park Project is nearing completion.  The John C. Dunham Pavilion incorporates a performance stage, state-of-the-art acoustics, with theatre seating, including roof-top viewing, for up to 3,600 people for smaller performances and lawn seating for an additional 10,000 to 15,000 people for larger concerts and events. The venue and music garden are modeled after outdoor entertainment venues in Milwaukee and Millennium Park in Chicago.

In addition to the initial 3-year, $2 million grant made to Aurora's Downtown Redevelopment Commission for the park in 2010, the Dunham Fund will continue to support the project with a $200,000 grant for entertainment during its inaugural season, June through September 2013.  In a unique partnership with the City of Aurora, the Paramount Theatre has been selected to book the entertainment for the Park.  $125,000 of the Dunham Fund grant to the Paramount Theatre will provide the Season Sponsorship for all of the City of Aurora-sponsored performances.  Estimated attendance at these dates combined will be between 60,000 and 90,000.  Another $75,000 grant will be paid in 2013 to secure a contract with an additional world-class artistic and inspirational performer for an otherwise financially unobtainable cultural performance in the Dunham Pavilion at RiverEdge Park for its inaugural season.

A List Program PMMC

The Dunham Fund supports
Provena Mercy Medical Center's
"The A List" Program for
Diabetes Prevention

Diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions in our country, and nearly 26 million American children and adults are diagnosed with diabetes.

In fact, the American Diabetes Association estimates that as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes in 2050.

In 2012, Provena Mercy Medical Center embarked on a unique program to help community members change the course of their lives.

"The A-List: Achieving Good Health," is a diabetes prevention program developed by the hospital's Center for Diabetic Wellness. The "A-List" program's goals were to help those who want to make lifestyle changes and to educate the community about the seriousness of diabetes.

In the program's inaugural year, the hospital selected fifteen men and women with risk factors for developing diabetes, such as having high cholesterol or blood pressure, being overweight, or living a sedentary lifestyle.  Selected participants received initial screenings, followed by eight weeks of educational programs, healthy eating, exercise, and followup screenings.

The program ended with a graduation ceremony and "healthy" luncheon to celebrate the success of the "A-List" members.

The A-Listers shared their experiences via blogs and other public forums, in hopes of inspiring others to make similar lifestyle changes. The program provided an opportunity for participants to connect with others who face similar challenges.

"Every 20 seconds, someone new is diagnosed with diabetes," said Maria Aurora Diaz, Manager of the Center for Diabetic Wellness at Provena Mercy Medical Center. "And lifestyle intervention is one of the leading ways to reduce the risk of developing the disease," she said. "It's our hope to help educate members of the community and to lead them toward the path of achieving good health."

Recognizing the importance of prediabetes education to its service area, the Dunham Fund awarded a $30,000 grant to Provena Mercy to continue The A-List program, which will run from December 1, 2012 through November 30, 2013.
