C. Daniel Boling
Albuquerque performer Daniel Boling headlines the
Second Saturday Community CoffeeHouse on July 9th!

David Peters opens for Daniel Boling!

The Second Saturday Community CoffeeHouse offers up another great night of family entertainment this month with Albuquerque Singer/Songwriter Daniel Boling.

2014 Winner of the Grassy Hill Kerrville New Folk songwriter contest, Daniel shares experiences from a life well-lived in places as far-ranging as Okinawa, Japan, and Padre Island, Texas. This balladeer /songwriter with the friendly tenor brings his well-crafted story songs to happy audiences coast-to-coast in over one hundred shows a year, from House Concerts and listening rooms to major festivals (Kerrville, Winfield, Woody Guthrie, and others).

Born into a traveling Air Force family, he later worked as a National Park Ranger (yes, the gun-toting kind) and as a Criminal Investigator for the US Bureau of Land Management. He started touring at 50, an age when most guys are planning their retirement. He's released seven albums since 1999 including, THESE HOUSES, produced by Jono Manson and released April of 2016 on the Berkalin Records label.
Daniel's songs tell interesting stories about a variety of characters, including himself. He plays the guitar and banjitar (a banjo/guitar hybrid) with a deft fingerpicking style that always enhances the stories, and a bit of harmonica into the bargain. His clear tenor draws positive comparisons to John Denver and Pete Seeger, and like Pete, Daniel is happiest when his audiences sing too!

There's a lot of Steve Goodman in Daniel's delivery and storytelling. You can also hear the influence of other classic folk singers and songs from the great American folk tradition. It's no surprise that iconic Appalachian folk singer Jean Ritchie is his second cousin. He's had the pleasure to share the stage with Tom Chapin, Small Potatoes, Jack Williams, Tim Henderson, John Flynn and many more. He's won numerous songwriting awards including Kerrville New Folk, Walnut Valley Festival, Santa Fe bluegrass and Old Time Festival, Albuquerque Folk Festival, and Woody Guthrie Folk.

There's a reason that Still on the Hill calls him "one of the most talented songwriters on the circuit." Whether or not you've walked the very same roads, you can't help but relate to these songs - and no matter what your story is, you'll love Daniel's.

A new opener for Second Saturday Community CoffeeHouse, David Peter's songs will make you cry, make you laugh, make you think, and he delivers them all in a clear, strong voice.

Over the last six years, his music has appealed to a wide range of audiences through coffee house shows, restaurants, festivals, and touring the Southwest. Locally in  the Albuquerque area, he has been a regular at Java Joe's and The Blackbird Buvette, as well as performing at Winning Coffee, Low Spirits, Rio Rancho, Bernalillo, and several local festivals and street fairs,  His songs have been finalists in several contests, including The New Mexico Music Awards.

David's 2009 CD
In the Lonely is out and is available at performances and on cdbaby.  He is currently finishing a new CD of original songs which should be available in the  fall of 2016.

David's style is primarily folk/Americana, but he mixes in some blues.  Songs range from the sadness of losing love and friendship to social commentary and humorous songs about the weather, relationships, and teaching, a career that spanned 31 years. People who have heard him liken him most to Gordon Lightfoot, who also happens to be one of his songwriting influences.  Other musical influences are Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, and Lennon/McCartney.

FREE!  Love Offerings will be accepted.

The mission of the Second Saturday Community CoffeeHouse is to provide the East Mountains with quality musical experiences in a family-style, listening-room environment.  The events, along with snacks and beverages, are family friendly and free to the public.  The House opens at 6 pm and the performance starts promptly
at 6:30.

Held the second Saturday of each month, the events consist of an Opening Act and a Headliner except for two Open Mics per year.  The CoffeeHouse hosts both professional and amateur musicians and performers of all ages.  The response has been so positive that the event is already booked through 2016.

Each month's event is sponsored by a local business, family, or individual.  This month the event has two sponsors - East Mountain Resident Bob Moffat and the New Mexico Music Awards.  A sponsorship is $25 and is a tax-deductible donation.

The CoffeeHouse is held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation (formerly the Unity Spiritual Center) at 1 Deanna Lane in Edgewood.  It is located just off Dinkle Road, 1.5 miles east of Mountain Valley Road, and 2.5 miles west of Highway 344.

Call for Opening Acts

We are booked through 2016 with headliners, but we need Opening Acts!  If you or someone you know is interested, please email CoffeeHouse@UnityEMtns.org with the info.  We don't pay our Openers, but we do feed them a home-cooked meal and we've been known to invite Openers to come back as Headliners.  We'd also love to feature some young up-and-coming musicians, so if you know any talented kids, send them our way!  More information can be found  on the musician page of our website.

Many Thanks to Our Volunteers and Sponsors!

The Second Saturday Community CoffeeHouse is run completely by volunteers and donations.  Many thanks to Fancy's Photo Solutions, Patricia Vansell, Stargate Healing and The New Mexico Music Awards for sponsoring our first six concerts this year!  Since we are a 501c3 organization, all donations are tax  deductible!  We are still looking for sponsors for the rest of the year!

Thanks to all our volunteers!  We couldn't do this without you!

We are grateful and we still need more help with various aspects of running the CoffeeHouse.  Some ways to help:
  • Hang posters in East Mountain areas ~1-2 weeks before concert
  • Like to be on stage?  Be an MC!  We provide a script and you add character
  • Like to run sound equipment?  Assist our Sound Man/Host and cover when he can't make it
  • Help with Setup and/or Tear Down
  • Purchase or Make Snacks for event
  • Help work in the kitchen during the event
  • Purchase or make dinner and deliver for musicians and volunteers (you, too)
  • Sponsor a night for $25 - any individual, family, or business can do this (and businesses can promote their stuff and be featured on our web page)
We feed all volunteers (and their families) dinner on concert night (with the exception of Open Mic nights).

So the next time that clipboard is passed around, please consider how you would help.  Thank you.
