Albuquerque Singer/Songwriter Chuck Hawley Headlines the Second Saturday Community CoffeeHouse April 9th

Multi-talented Annette Johnson Opens

The Second Saturday Community CoffeeHouse offers up another great night of family entertainment this month with Albuquerque Singer/Songwriter Chuck Hawley headlining and the lovely Annette Johnson opening.

Chuck Hawley reflects the strength and fragility of the New Mexico desert in his songwriting, singing and instrumental explorations.  His music is equally inspired by Americana, Alt-Rock, & Funk, with strong World Beat influences.  He plays guitar, mandolin, and lap steel, and uses each of these instruments as tools to explore music.  He currently plays with the Chuck Hawley Group and Pink Freud (a tribute to the music of Pink Floyd).  Hawley enjoys performing for any size audience from intimate acoustic gatherings to festival rock concerts.

Chuck has been playing in New Mexico and the mountain states region since the late 1980's. He first caused a splash on the Albuquerque music scene in 1988 with quirky alt-rock band Splinter Fish which he co-lead with Debra "DebO" Orlofsky.  Since then he has delved into various styles with different groups.  Since 2009 he has lead his own Chuck Hawley Group with Douglas Bellen on bass, Carli Marshall on saxophones, and Ernesto "Zoom" Crespin on drums.  The group's current players are crucial in allowing the diversity of Hawley's songwriting styles to shine through, regardless of "genre".

Chuck's influences through the years have been: John Hiatt, Neil Young, Son Volt, Los Lobos, Pink Floyd, Samba Ngo, Salif Keita, Peter Gabriel, David Lindley, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Gov't Mule, Robin Trower, XTC, King Crimson, Funkadelic, The Beatles...and many more.

A new opener for Second Saturday Community CoffeeHouse, Annette Johnson is 17 years old from Albuquerque, New Mexico.  She's a junior at eCADEMY APS online charter school.  Annette has taken voice lessons for 9 years (classical and contemporary styles.) and sang as a principal cover for the Santa Fe Opera's Magic Flute-- Spirit #1. She has studied violin at the Margaret Hawn Studio in the East Mountains, for 14 years, playing  violin in the Albuquerque Youth Symphony for the last three years, and has performed in Carnegie Hall and at the National Theatre of Costa Rica with that orchestra. Annette performs in many community theatre projects and just she finished performing with Landmark Musicals "My Fair Lady" (ensemble) at  Rodey Theatre, UNM.   Last summer, Annette attended several Berklee College of Music song writing and performance workshops (Boston and Los Angeles).  She also received a Berklee scholarship to study film scoring with Pinar Toprak (partner of Hans Zimmer) which Annette attended last semester.

FREE!  Love Offerings will be accepted.

The mission of the Second Saturday Community CoffeeHouse is to provide the East Mountains with quality musical experiences in a family-style, listening-room environment.  The events, along with snacks and beverages, are family friendly and free to the public.  The House opens at 6 pm and the performance starts promptly
at 6:30.

Held the second Saturday of each month, the events consist of an Opening Act and a Headliner except for two Open Mics per year.  The CoffeeHouse hosts both professional and amateur musicians and performers of all ages.  The response has been so positive that the event is already booked through 2016.

Each month's event is sponsored by a local business, family, or individual.  This month the event has two sponsors - East Mountain Resident Bob Moffat and the New Mexico Music Awards.  A sponsorship is $25 and is a tax-deductible donation.

The CoffeeHouse is held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation (formerly the Unity Spiritual Center) at 1 Deanna Lane in Edgewood.  It is located just off Dinkle Road, 1.5 miles east of Mountain Valley Road, and 2.5 miles west of Highway 344.

Call for Opening Acts

We are booked through 2016 with headliners, but we need Opening Acts!  If you or someone you know is interested, please email CoffeeHouse@UnityEMtns.org with the info.  We don't pay our Openers, but we do feed them a home-cooked meal and we've been known to invite Openers to come back as Headliners.  We'd also love to feature some young up-and-coming musicians, so if you know any talented kids, send them our way!  More information can be found  on the musician page of our website.

Many Thanks to Our Volunteers and Sponsors!

The Second Saturday Community CoffeeHouse is run completely by volunteers and donations.  Many thanks to Fancy's Photo Solutions, Patricia Vansell, Stargate Healing and The New Mexico Music Awards for sponsoring our first six concerts this year!  Since we are a 501c3 organization, all donations are tax  deductible!

Thanks to all our volunteers!  We couldn't do this without you!

We are grateful and we still need more help with various aspects of running the CoffeeHouse.  Some ways to help:
  • Hang posters in East Mountain areas ~1-2 weeks before concert
  • Like to be on stage?  Be an MC!  We provide a script and you add character
  • Like to run sound equipment?  Assist our Soundman/Host and cover when he can't make it
  • Help with Setup and/or Tear Down
  • Purchase or Make Snacks for event
  • Help work in the kitchen during the event
  • Purchase or make dinner and deliver for musicians and volunteers (you, too)
  • Sponsor a night for $25 - any individual, family, or business can do this (and businesses can promote their stuff and be featured on our web page)
We feed all volunteers (and their families) dinner on concert night.

So the next time that clipboard is passed around, please consider how you would help.  Thank you.
