Hello Everyone,
We open this week sharing that it is with great sadness that we learned of Dan Small's passing. A legend in Vancouver's home-brewing scene, Dan (of Dan's Homebrewing Supplies) hooked hundreds of craft-beer fans and sorted them out with everything they needed to get started brewing. Many of these brewers went on to start breweries and the impact Dan has had on the craft beer scene in Vancouver cannot be ignored. Our sympathies go to his family, friends and colleagues. I'm sure many of us will be raising a glass to him. We shared a little more about his history and public support here on our website. A memorial brew by some local brewers with staff from Dan's is currently in the works and will be happening this Sunday at Parallel 49 Brewing.
Their mission is to encourage you to drink locally and support your local breweries. From established favourites to emerging nano-breweries, they're proud to connect you to the vibrant community that is the craft brewery scene in Vancouver. Hop aboard one of their brewery tours (or book your own private one) for a fun, informative and memorable experience, and let them introduce you to the beers putting Vancouver on the map.

Craft Beer Around the Web
Local importer of Cantillon and many other treats, Copper & Theory, shared this story on "A Brief History on Sour Beer" from The New Yorker. Now announcing Zwanze Day - an annual, global, simultaneous tapping of a one-off lambic beer from Brasserie Cantillon, created just for this day. This year, Vancouver will be participating! It's Sept 14th at Alibi Room. Mark it down, save the date, and be excited. Follow Copper & Theory and #YVRBeerTweetUp for details. Word is they are selling tickets to be part of a very limited draw to attend - here.
Quirky Beer Words
Pitching (the Yeast) Fermentation begins with the pitching of the yeast. "Pitching" is simply a brewer's term meaning to add the yeast to the fermenter. Before pitching, you need to make sure that you've properly cooled and aerated the wort. In some cases, you may need to prepare the yeast well beforehand; for more information, see below or under Preparing the Ingredients. The steps you may want to take to prepare your yeast depend on whether you are using dry or liquid yeast.
Cheers, Monica Frost

Cask Nights
Missing our Cask Nights listed in the Newsletter? Not to worry; we have something even better! On our website in the Events calendar we have the various regular cask night locations and times listed and will be adding special one offs regularly too. Then, to find out what the actual cask is (which is what we post on Twitter and Facebook on the day of) you can simply refer to the Twitter Feed on the right side bar of our web page. You might have to look for a few seconds to see the location you're interested in come up in the rotation. We generally tweet mid morning what the cask(s) will be for the evening. We hope that this is a good solution and will no longer have reason to miss another event again. So make sure you have the Events Calendar bookmarked and view it regularly to help you plan which cask night and event you would like to attend. Click HERE to view the Events Calendar
