IPA Day August 1st

What is it? Rebecca of Becks Beer Blog writes: "It's a social media event, created by the  Beer Wench, (real name Ashley Routson) a blogger and beer expert out of Berkely CA, after she saw other beverages getting attention by declaring themselves a day, so she named the first Thursday of August IPAday. Most of those other beverage days (such as Chardonnay day which was May 23rd) are corporate sponsored days. #IPAday is not. Its a day for the lovers of craft beer and India Pale Ales in particular to celebrate the best beverage on earth and create awareness via social media. Celebrate by hoisting a glass of IPA and tweeting about it, or attending an #IPAday event, or better yet, organize your own event!" Full blog post here. The Donnelly Group are putting on 30 Days of IPA with featured IPAs at their various establishments all month. Craft Beer Around the Web

CTV News did a video spot on craft beer yesterday. Vancouverites thirsty for local brew as craft beer sales soar.

Local blogger Barley Mowat talks about cellaring beer in his post Stand up or Sit Down?

Quirky Beer Words

Bottle Conditioning - is one of few different ways to carbonate beer. Taking advantage of the live yeast still suspended in beer after fermentation, the brewer adds a small amount of sugar to the beer just before sealing it in the bottle. This kicks off a small secondary fermentation that produces carbon dioxide and a negligible amount of alcohol. Because the beer is sealed in the bottle, the CO2 has nowhere to go and is therefore absorbed by the beer, thus producing fermentation. Bottle conditioning results in a thin film of dead yeast cells collected in the bottom of the bottle. These are harmless and, in some beer styles, a key component of the beer's profile. While many styles are prized for being clear, some styles are expected to be cloudy and taste of the yeast.

Executive Update

Update from our President, Adam Chatburn

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to complete the CAMRA BC Craft Beer Tourism Survey. Having concrete figures showing how big the craft beer tourism market is far more persuasive when we talk to the provincial and municipal governments than anecdotal evidence. It is startling just how much money is spent on craft beer when people travel to Portland, Seattle and Victoria, but it is also interesting to see how far people do travel for the perfect pint.

If you haven't taken a moment to complete the survey yet please follow the link so that we can collect even more information about craft beer tourism strengthening our advocacy position. We'd like to have a few more participants before we share the results.

President, CAMRA BC - Vancouver Chapter

Jan Zeschky of The Province reviews Powell Street's White IPA W/ Citra

Spiegelau IPA Glass now available at Legacy Liquor Store
IPA Glass

"With input from two of the leading IPA brewers in the United States- Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head and Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada- Spiegelau has created the new standard for IPA beer glassware. The Spiegelau IPA glass is designed to showcase varying aromatic profiles for the American 'hop forward' IPA beer, preserve a frothy head and volatiles and maintain a comfortably wide opening for the drinker to "nose" the beer. This is the go-to vessel for IPA beers!"

Cask Nights
Missing our Cask Nights listed in the Newsletter? Not to worry; we have something even better! On our website in the Events calendar we have the various regular cask night locations and times listed and will be adding special one offs regularly too. Then, to find out what the actual cask is (which is what we post on Twitter and Facebook on the day of) you can simply refer to the Twitter Feed on the right side bar of our web page. You might have to look for a few seconds to see the location you're interested in come up in the rotation. We generally tweet mid morning what the cask(s) will be for the evening. We hope that this is a good solution and will no longer have reason to miss another event again. So make sure you have the Events Calendar bookmarked and view it regularly to help you plan which cask night and event you would like to attend. Click HERE to view the Events Calendar

If you would like your Cask information promoted on our website, Facebook and Twitter please email Mike.
