Hello Everyone,
It's unanimous!
Vancouver Approves On-Site Lounges in Breweries
Last night the City of Vancouver took a huge step forward in modernizing their liquor policies by unanimously approving zoning changes to allow breweries, distilleries and wineries to have small, licensed lounges on-site where they can sell their products to be consumed. Read more on this and how " Provincial Red Tape May Delay Openings For Several Months" in Paddy's latest VanEast Beer Blog post. You can also read The Province's story here.

I'd like to take a moment to thank several key people; those who rallied the craft beer community to get involved and write letters, everyone who took the time to do so and the individuals who went to the public hearing and spoke. Chuck aka Barley Mowat, broke down the issue in layman's terms and wrote a form letter that approximately 285 of you signed and sent in. Another 28 of you wrote your own original letters. Conrad from Brassneck Brewing, Paddy Treavor of VanEast Beer Blog and others who also educated the masses on the issues and personally spoke at the hearing. Social media was on fire and many of you pitched in to share the cause. To all of you, thank you!
This coming Saturday CAMRA will have a booth at the Trout Lake Farmers Market from 9am to 2pm. Come on down and say hello. We'll also be able to sign up and renew members.

6 Cities Breweries Helped Transform - San Francisco Chronicle
Quirky Beer Words
A HOP BACK: *correction: Rebecca Kneen, hops grower, Left Fields and Crannog Ales
"As a hop grower, I feel it is incumbent upon me to submit a correction! The part of the hops used by brewers is the cone or fruit of the hops, not the flowers. The flowers are wee little insignificant things which happen earlier. The cue as to which is which is that you can have seeds in the cones (mostly found in British hops, pretty much everyone else uses only females in production yards) - something found only in the fruit, not in flowers. The inner "petals" of the cone are called "bracteoles", the outer ones are "bracts".
So there you have it - the anatomy of a brewing ingredient! I might add that a hop-back is a very inexpensive piece of equipment which allows brewers to use the freshest, least handled whole hops, which is the bulk of BC hops production. Cheers, and thank you!"
Cheers, Monica Frost

Executive Update
Update from our President, Adam Chatburn
Brewery Lounges were unanimously voted in!
A great day for the craft beer community in Vancouver. CAMRA BC would like to thank Mayor Robertson and the Councillors, Conrad Gmoser, Paddy Treavor and all the craft beer supporters in BC who took the time to appear, write and email. I think many people will be surprised how quickly this will become a huge success and significant tourist attraction. This shows that the City of Vancouver is committed to supporting the craft beer industry and culture in deed as well as word.
Hopefully the full review of BC's liquor laws promised by Christy Clarke, John Yap and Suzanne Anton will be as open, quick, positive and successful. As a major stakeholder CAMRA BC looks forward to also taking part in the provincial consultation.
Adam Chatburn,
President, CAMRA BC - Vancouver Chapter
Update from our Education Liaison, Danny Seeton
Back by popular request! An overview of the six most common beer flaws will be discussed, along with samples to help new and experienced beer drinkers identify "off" beers. The origin of these flavors and how they function on one's palate and affect the overall experience of the beer will also be introduced.
Off Flavours - July 23rd @ 7pm - at Steamworks
The Off-Flavors Tasting will be directed by Chad McCarthy. As a National Rank BJCP beer judge and Certified Cicerone®, Chad has had a great deal of tasting experience. He is excited to help improve everyone's understanding of beer flavour and aroma so that the very best beers and pubs gain the popularity that they deserve. Cask Nights
Missing our Cask Nights listed in the Newsletter? Not to worry; we have something even better! On our website in the Events calendar we have the various regular cask night locations and times listed and will be adding special one offs regularly too. Then, to find out what the actual cask is (which is what we post on Twitter and Facebook on the day of) you can simply refer to the Twitter Feed on the right side bar of our web page. You might have to look for a few seconds to see the location you're interested in come up in the rotation. We generally tweet mid morning what the cask(s) will be for the evening. We hope that this is a good solution and will no longer have reason to miss another event again. So make sure you have the Events Calendar bookmarked and view it regularly to help you plan which cask night and event you would like to attend. Click HERE to view the Events Calendar
