Local beer blogs of interest

If you follow the Oregon brewing scene and have ever thought about taking the Amtrak train there, you will want to check out this article by long time CAMRA members Dave & Ivana Smith on their new Facebook microblog, BeerSeekers.

The above blogs have a primary focus on craft beer in Vancouver and British Columbia. These blogs present commentary of our local craft beer scene, and as such, contain content and opinions that CAMRA Vancouver may not share. We welcome your comments or suggestions.

Hello Everyone,

CAMRA 2013
Ta da! New logo!
CAMRA BC - Vancouver Chapter President Adam Chatburn explains: "I'm proud to announce that our new logo has arrived! Put together by our new volunteer
Creative Director Sam Gilchrist, we've incorporated the classic and beloved CAMRA BC mug design with something a bit more colourful and modern. The sunburst over the north shore mountains and the stylized cityscape and waterfront really emphasizes Vancouver's identity as the emerging craft beer centre of BC and Canada. We love it and it's already on our new membership cards, and soon it'll be appearing on
T-shirts and other merchandise.
What do you think of it? Let us know and you could win some prizes that feature our new logo!

It's finally here! Vancouver Craft Beer Week kicks off on Friday. Many of the events are sold out VCBW but not all of them! We have most of the events listed below with links for ticket purchases. A couple to note that have been posting exciting new beer additions to their events all week are:

The Riverboat Throw Down presented by The Portside Pub and #YVRBeerTweetUp. Thursday June 6th. This night will consist of a 10 brewery "Cask-Off" battle made up of specialty designed competition casks to showcase the creativity of the Vancouver brewing scene. Breweries will compete for the title of Cask Maverick! They've posted the breweries involved and have started "leaking" on Follow us on Twitter what some of the casks will be.

Belgian Showcase presented by BierCraft. Monday June 3rd at their Cambie location. 50+ Belgian beers and Belgian appies all included in your ticket cost for the evening. This week it was announced that they'll also be pouring Chimay Red, Ommegang Game of Thrones "Iron Throne Blonde Ale", Logsdon Farmhouse Ales Oak Aged Seizoen Bretta and Driftwood's new "The Heretic Tripel". It's an incredible line-up!  Follow us on Twitter

Craft Beer Around the Web

Have you all seen BC Craft Beer News? They share a wide variety of news articles on craft beer and will soon be in print. Described as: "It's a newsprint publication dedicated to the promotion, growth and enjoyment of this change. We hope you will read with us as we continually seek to explore, expose and most importantly enjoy craft beer and brewing (home) culture in British Columbia. Have something to say? BC Craft Beer News is constantly on the hunt for new talent and encourages all interested creatives to get in touch."

Quirky Beer Words

I found a great article from Draft Magazine all about Beer Lingo with a link to their full Beer DictionaryThis word has been coming up more and more lately. Brett: Short for Brettanomyces, a brewing yeast that gives beer a distinct barnyard funk.

Executive Update

Update from our President, Adam Chatburn

Although we've been busy of late working on other advocacy issues we've not neglected any of our existing campaigns.

Announcing: FUSS Cards

CAMRA BC - Vancouver Chapter is a consumer advocacy group and we believe 100% that consumers deserve all the information that the law demands at the very least. I'm sure that most of you have experienced a short pour at some pub or other and wanted to bring it up with the server or the manager but didn't want to create a "fuss". Well we've got you covered! now rolling out in our membership packs are the first of our FUSS cards. These business cards can be kept in your wallet and if you experience a short pour or an illegal pint - or even don't see the quantities on the menu then you can leave the card behind with the server  or manager to remind them of their legal and moral obligations.

The FUSS cards were created by Scott from onceyougocraft.com; a CAMRA member who emailed the idea to us out of the blue, we loved it and went straight into production. Thanks again Scott!

Read the full update and view the FUSS cards here.

FUSS cards will be available at any event with a CAMRA BC - Vancouver Chapter booth and we'll be sending them out in the new membership packs to you when you renew online!

We've also started having a booth at the Vancouver Farmers' Markets around town. This Saturday we'll be at the West End market from 9am to 2pm. Come along and say hello, pick up some Fuss Cards and/or sign up/renew your membership.

Cask Nights
Missing our Cask Nights listed in the Newsletter? Not to worry; we have something even better! On our website in the Events calendar we have the various regular cask night locations and times listed and will be adding special one offs regularly too. Then, to find out what the actual cask is (which is what we post on Twitter and Facebook on the day of) you can simply refer to the Twitter Feed on the right side bar of our web page. You might have to look for a few seconds to see the location you're interested in come up in the rotation. We generally tweet mid morning what the cask(s) will be for the evening. We hope that this is a good solution and will no longer have reason to miss another event again. So make sure you have the Events Calendar bookmarked and view it regularly to help you plan which cask night and event you would like to attend. Click HERE to view the Events Calendar

If you would like your Cask information promoted on our website, Facebook and Twitter please email Mike.
