Local beer blogs of interest
Once You Go Craft: Last Thursday, Hops Connect held their official launch party at Portside Pub in Gastown, and it was a great social night of brewer meets supplier.

The above blogs have a primary focus on craft beer in Vancouver and British Columbia. These blogs present commentary of our local craft beer scene, and as such, contain content and opinions that CAMRA Vancouver may not share. We welcome your comments or suggestions.

Introducing the "Brewed Awakening Feature Tap at Pat's Pub & Brewhouse." I just love craft beer community stories like this one. Jan Zeschky, beer blogger for The Province, was called with a very special offer; would he like to choose the beer for the pub's rotating feature tap? It's part of a draft list expansion for Pat's Pub, which has been serving craft beer for 12 years now and has now seen fit to boost its tap count to 20 due to demand. His first choice is the Powell Street Craft Brewery Dive Bomb Porter. Read the full story here.

Casks! Cask nights are popping up all over town. A few of you have told me that you miss the updates in the Newsletter and aren't on Facebook or Twitter. Not to worry; we have something even better! On our website in the Events calendar we have the various regular cask night locations and times listed and will be adding special one offs too. Then, to find out what the actual cask is (which is what we post on Twitter and Facebook on the day of) you can simply refer to the Twitter Feed on the right side bar of our web page. You might have to look for a few seconds to see the location you're interested in come up in the rotation. We generally tweet mid morning what the cask(s) will be for the evening. I hope that's a good solution.

Craft Beer Around the Web

LDB's Growler Grab Marks Another Low in Liquor Legislation - This story by Jan Zeschky of The Province's Brewed Awakening best sums things up. "It's been a roller-coaster month or so in terms of B.C.'s liquor laws and how they relate to the province's burgeoning craft-beer industry."

Speaking of Growlers...Tired of your growlers going flat before you have a chance to finish them? Well then drink faster! Just kidding - you should look into a TapIt Cap. This clever new gadget fits over your growler's opening, ensuring that the beer in your growler stays fresh, carbonated, and ready to drink. Thanks to a slot that accepts standard-sized CO2 canisters and a built-in tap and tap handle, it turns your growler into a handheld keg and tap, perfect for barbecues, social gatherings, or anytime you want fresh, draught craft beer.

Quirky Beer Words

Dry-hopping. You will hear that often when referring to casks and how they were prepared. It is the addition of dry hops to fermenting or aging beer to increase its hop character or aroma.

Here's some tasting notes: Like many of Ninkasi beers this is an ale more than a specific style though we put it in the Northwest Pale category. A light toasted malt flavor is more reminiscent of a British Pale but the hops are bright and very Northwest. Flavorful and easy to drink!

Just like the eerie sensation that local cavers feel when going "lights out" in one of the Island's 1,000+ recorded caves, our IDA is a deep descent into your taste buds. Dark in colour with a prominent Northwest hop aroma, the body is balanced with semi-sweet malt flavours of roasted coffee and chocolate. So go on and take a sip into absolute darkness...

Powell Street Brewing gave us a little teaser of their Belgian Witbier with Ginger and Cardamom that they had just brewed this past weekend. Looking forward to this and what else they've got brewing!

Mike of Mikes Craft Beer blog shares with us a brief insight of Richmond's Big River Brewing Nut Brown Ale.
