Local Breweries Feel Slighted by LDB's Plan to Lure US Craft Sales to Gov't Liquor Stores
Want to understand more about how the liquor distribution system works and ultimately doesn't work? Then read the most recent post by Paddy Treavor of VanEast Beer Blog. Paddy also posed the question "Is the LDB looking to support BC breweries at a critical time of growth for this local, home-grown industry which is providing key employment opportunities in BC during hard economic times and if so, how?" Follow the link to see the answer he got.

Growler
Rebecca of Beck's Beer Blog has a regular spot on CBC's On the Coast with Stephen Quinn. This week she talked about Growlers and CAMRA's Save the Growler Campaign. Topics included: What are they? Why and where do you get one? Are you ready to pay 30% more tax on your fills and what that really means. If you missed the live broadcast you can find it here. (Mar 5, fast forward to the 2:18 mark) Next show March 19th and you can listen live @ 5.50pm FM 88.1. Rebecca also blogged a "Love letter to CAMRA" this past week. We are so honoured and humbled to receive such praise. <3 Craft beer community! Thank you Rebecca!

Gluten Free Beer is good? Blogger Lynn from Beer and Travel Adventures (Twitter @BGCanary) was asked by McClelland Premium Imports to sample their Mongozo Pilsner Gluten Free beer...Thumbs up! It's available at Biercraft (both), Commune Cafe, Chambar, The District (North Vancouver), and  Portside Pub. Local private LRSs include: Legacy Liquor Store, Brewery Creek, Viti Wine and Lager, Firefly Fine Wines and Ales, and 16th Street Liquor. If this interests you then you should also try the excellent Widmer Bros Omission de-glutenised pale ale available at St. Augustines and some liquor stores.

Executive Update

Update from our President, Adam Chatburn

When news broke last week on the Van East Beer blog that Growler fills were to be given an additional tax it was hard to see it as anything other as a tax directly on craft beer, hitting both the burgeoning craft beer industry in BC and those people with great taste who choose to support local ale artisans (that's you!). Naturally CAMRA BC was outraged  and we immediately issued a Press Release and created the #savethegrowlers campaign which has collected over 900 signatures in only 5 days - the most signatures of any CAMRA BC's campaigns! Thanks again to everyone who has taken a moment to sign and if you already have signed please encourage others to - I'd love to present over a 1000 signatures to the government!  To continue reading...

Education Update from Danny Seeton

As mentioned last issue, we are proud to announce our new Education Series starting in April. CAMRA Education "CAMRA Vancouver is passionate about promoting beer education and offers monthly classes at a variety of locations. Local beer experts and brewers will present topics ranging from introductory classes on beer production and history to more specific lectures on beer styles of major brewing regions. There are also cross-over classes comparing and contrasting beer with wine, whiskey, cider, and mead. As always beer education is better with samples, which will be a large part of demonstrating the information presented in every class. Keep an eye out for any topics that strike your fancy." Danny

Course information and dates are on our website
Tickets go on sale tonight (Wed Mar 6th) at 7pm and will be very limited so check back to our web page frequently for more information and more education events.

Kitsilano Cold Beer and Wine Store

"Our store is located in the heart of Kitsilano at 2289 West Broadway. We are a full service liquor store that has greatly expanded its craft beer selection in the past six months. We have regular craft beer tastings, craft beer giveaways and always have new craft beers coming in every single week. A good part of the reason I feel we have a great craft beer selection is that a lot of the products we carry have been brought in at the suggestion of our customers. There is no doubt a craft beer community out there and we are pleased to be a part of it and love to hear their suggestions. This of course is why we are so happy to be a part of CAMRA." - Dave Benson, Owner
