Mendeley Can Help (Free)

What is Mendeley?

Mendeley is advertised as a unique combination of reference management software and a social network site for students and researchers.  It should be noted that Mendeley is primarily for academic study.  While it has social networking functions, it is not really for socializing in the personal sense, so you should treat it as a professional medium.  The combination of social networking and reference management allows you to share articles and send e-mails containing articles with ease.  All you need to do is upload the file by dragging it onto the page dropping it.  In most cases, Mendeley will automatically identify the author, title, and other reference information.  If this does not happen, it is usually enough to type in the author's name and article title to get the rest of the reference information.  Articles on Mendeley can be organized based on topics in your library, making it relatively easy to organize your potential sources.  You can star articles that are important, which helps with keeping track of them.  Mendeley can also help with adding annotations to articles as well as creating reference pages.  All of this and more is free.

A.L.I.C.E. Training:  Public Safety and Human Resources

Kent State University offers a 90 minute A.L.I.C.E. training through the Department of Public Safety in connection with the Division of Human Resources. The acronym A.L.I.C.E. stands for Alert, Lockdown, Information, Counter, Evacuate. According to Kent State University's Public Safety website, A.L.I.C.E. is a crisis training program meant to help prepare Kent State University student, faculty, and staff for potential active shooter events.   Kent State University's Public Safety website characterizes this training as a "highly effective"and "common sense" preparation for active shooter events.

Recent violent events on campuses around the United States have made campus security and safety one of the most pressing issues that higher education institutions must face. As future higher education administrators, being aware of your campus' safety and security protocols is paramount.   As such, it is highly recommended by Kent State University that all campus members take the time to participate in this training, especially faculty and staff.

Certificates: General Information

The College of Education, Health, and Human Services offer many certificates.  You may want to consider applying for a certificate because many of the courses required for our certificates may also be courses required for your degree.   You can work on a certificate at the same time you are working on your degree.  You can also receive a certificate if you have graduated with a degree and you already took some of the courses.  One thing you must remember is your coursework cannot be more than 6 years old at the time the certificate is awarded.  In any case, you will need to apply for admission and be admitted into a certificate program.  Once admitted, you will be assigned a certificate advisor who will guide you through the coursework and plan of study that is required.

New Face, Our Place: Madison Ivan

Hi! My name is Madison Ivan and I am a new Education Specialist student in the Higher Education Administration Program.  I graduated from Case Western Reserve University this past spring with both a B.A. and M.A. in history.  In order to graduate with both degrees, I participated in an Integrated Graduate Studies program that allowed me to take graduate classes during my Junior and Senior year. Participating in the Integrated Graduate Studies program inspired me to go into higher education administration, as I had to work closely with both faculty and administrators throughout the process.  Higher Education Administration is a completely new field for me and I am excited to further my education.

I am currently a graduate assistant in Student Success Programs at Kent State University.  I work primarily with Kent's orientation program: Destination Kent State.  I love working with students and helping them make their transition into college life.

I am from Twinsburg, Ohio originally, so I am pretty familiar with Kent and Northeast Ohio.  I currently live in Kent with my husband (new word for me-we've been married less than a month!) and our puppy, Polly.  I am enjoying living and learning in Kent, and I look forward to meeting everyone!

New Face, Our Place: Krittika Chatterjee
Hello, my name is Krittika Chatterjee. This is my first semester in the HIED Administration and Student Personnel Master's program. I am from Calcutta
(Kolkata), India and I moved to the United States for the first time in 2005 at the age of 18. A full scholarship to Kent State University enabled me to get an education in the United States.  I received my baccalaureate degree in Broadcast Journalism from the Kent School of Journalism and Mass Communication in May 2009. I went straight into graduate school the following Fall and graduated with my first Master's degree, in Journalism, with an emphasis on Media Convergence, in December 2010. While working towards my first Master's, I was a graduate assistant at the Honors College where I was an Academic Advisor to high achieving Honors students.

My journey after college was very exhilarating, yet stressful. I moved to Greenville, South Carolina where I worked as a news anchor. I later moved back to Calcutta and continued working for the same organization as a foreign correspondent. During the following three years, work first took me to New Delhi, the capital of India and then back to Calcutta again, where I was hired by Times Now, the most watched, 24-hour news channel in India, as a Correspondent. My area of coverage included most of the Eastern Coast of India, starting from the state of Odisha all the way to the North-East, bordering China, Myanmar, and Bhutan. My stories ranged from breaking news, politics, crime, violence, fires, gang rapes, and extreme weather to sports, entertainment, and human-interest stories.

New Face, Our Place: Selena Myers
Selena (Right), Daughter Ava (Center), Husband Mike (Left)

Hi-- I'm Selena Myers, and am a new doctoral student in the Higher Education Administration program. I'm currently the Satellite Coordinator for the Barberton branch of Stark State College.  My role is to serve as an advocate for students as well as represent Stark State College in the community.  I provide advising, financial aid, and registration assistance for students.  I also create the list of course offerings for each semester, work with community leaders to promote Stark State College, and manage our over 13,000 square foot facility.  It is a very all-encompassing position, but one that I greatly enjoy!  I live in Cuyahoga Falls with my amazing husband, Mike, and our beautiful daughter, Ava, who is 5 ½ and just started kindergarten this fall.  My husband is the store manager for the Home Depot in Fairlawn and has been with the company for almost 15 years.  We have an 11 year-old beagle, named Maizey, who is a great companion for our family!  For fun, I love to read and travel, though, now my reading will be mostly of the textbook nature.  I have a great passion for the world of higher education and am looking forward to my time at Kent State University to complete my doctorate.  I hope to become a Dean of Advising or a Dean of Student Services during my employment.  I look forward to getting to know those in the program as well!

New Face, Our Place: Curtis Burkeen

Hello all! I am Curtis Burkeen and I am a first year Master's candidate in the Higher Education program. I graduated from Kent State University with a degree in Education and have been on staff with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics since Fall Semester 2012. I currently work as a Learning Specialist for the Men's Basketball team and the Football team. Together, we work on study skills and strategies, note taking skills, test preparation, and organizational skills. The privilege of assisting student-athletes with meeting their academic goals is unbelievably rewarding! I have been associated with athletics my entire life and see myself continuing to serve the needs of student-athletes for some time to come. I possess a strong educational background in History, specifically Modern American History: World War II-Present. Prior to coming to work at Kent State, I spent ten years working with student-athletes through the game of golf as a swing instructor and through player development.

I live in Stow with my wife, Valerie and my two children, Reagan (8) and JB (7). I am originally from Kentucky and began my undergraduate career at the University of Kentucky. I am passionate about my family, golf, basketball and my student-athletes! I am excited for the opportunity to contribute to the reputation of this program and look forward to getting to know you all! GO FLASHES!!

Old Face, New Place: George O'Connell

Jennie (2nd from the Left) and George (Right)

Hi there - my name is George O'Connell and I am a third-year doctoral student. I was a full time student for the past two years but recently accepted a full time position at Case Western Reserve University as the Director of Student Conduct & Community Standards. My role is to essentially oversee the conduct process for the university. This includes everything from

alcohol and drug violations to academic dishonesty to Title IX and harassment cases.

For the better part of the past 20 years I have had some level of responsibility for student conduct issues. I began as a resident assistant at the University of Massachusetts, and was an Assistant Hall Director while I worked on my masters. I was a Hall Director and Assistant Director of Student Conduct at the University of New Hampshire where I worked for 12 years. Even at Kent State, I volunteered as a student member on hearing boards.  Prior to taking the full-time position, I worked with Dr. Lara for two years teaching the Career Navigation class for undergraduate students.
