I hope you had a great weekend and stayed dry! I am looking forward to another fun filled week packed with excitement and learning. Our last couple of Soccer games are this week and are both at home. It's hard to believe that we are a couple of days away from the month of October and close to completing the first semester of school. My... how time flies!
Remember this Thursday, October 1, we will begin releasing car riders and walkers each day at 4:05 before bus riders are released. If your child's dismissal mode changes, please communicate with your child's 8th period teacher via email or note. Please make adjustments to your arrival time to ensure that you are here to meet your child to quickly move to your vehicle. After the car riders and walkers are clear from the halls and front walkway, we will release buses shortly after. This adjustment will not cause bus riders to arrive home any later, if anything....a few minutes earlier.
Parking in the lot on the bus side poses a safety concern with parents and students walking between the buses to get to their car. Parking in this area by unauthorized personnel will be prohibited from 3:30 - 4:30 beginning on Thursday, October 1. The safest place to pick up your child is on the carpool side.
There are three parking options: 1) If you choose to walk up to the building to wait for your child, please park in the lot on the carpool side (Elkins South lot); 2) The top parking lot in front of Hembree Springs, which is closest to Elkins Road (Hembree North lot); 3) The lot near the basketball goals, toward the back of the school (Elkins West lot). If you choose to park in the North or West lot, please do not block the cross lane preventing Hembree's buses from rolling on down. Thank you!!
We have five more Early Release Days for this school year. Below are dates and themes that will guide the focus of activities. These activities are cross curricular in that they touch upon other content areas.

6th Grade will not leave campus
Donna Kokumo Buie, (Mama Koku), is a Master Storyteller and children's writer. Ms. Koku is the Official Teller for the National Black Arts Festival Children's Educational Village. Her focus will be fairy-tales, folktales, fables, and myths. The sixth grade will attend an assembly where they will hear Mama Koku recite some of her works. Afterward, students will create their own stories for the remainder of the day in a fun and engaging environment.
7th Grade will not leave campus
The seventh grade will participate in three sessions. Dr. Dennis, a local doctor, will host a presentation on cells. During the second session, students will learn about the components of newspapers and media. During the last session (Kid President/Ted Talk), students will focus on public speaking. Stage actress, Christine Billies, will talk with students about using stage voice and presence when delivering a speech.
8th Grade (on and off campus)
Two groups of 8th grade students will travel off campus.
Ms. Kennedy's Science classes will visit Andretti Indoor Carting and Games to learn how Physical Science impacts our daily lives.
Ms. Ingram's Advisement class will visit the Atlanta Humane Society (Mansell Campus) to learn about the Humane Society and their role in our community.
The remaining 8th grade students will rotate through four exciting activities. The first activity is aligned with the game, "Clue". Students will work to solve mysterious happenings. The second activity is an Ice Cream Business plan. Students will make their own ice cream, then create a marketing strategy to sell their delicious ice cream. The third activity is a Media Seminar. Students will choose to focus on fashion or sports. The last activity is a Movie Critic session. Students will watch movie clips to create their own movie trailers.
**Students remaining on campus, during this go round, will have other opportunities to travel off campus.
