This week at Elkins Pointe

Hello, Titans!

March has been a whirlwind of celebration and excitement - all while gearing up for our GA Milestones Statewide Testing after spring break. The students are ready for the test, and I believe Spring Break the week before will be a perfect opportunity to relax and rest up for the big event. I hope that all of you have safe, joyful travels and return to us ready to close out this school year strong!

Let's Celebrate!

Kakehashi Exchange Program

Our Kakehashi Exchange Program was a great success, with student visitations during the day and a lovely Welcome Dinner as well. This program is such a strong example of the importance of global awareness and the power of relationships. Our Titans enjoyed making friendships that will last a lifetime.

Titan Parents Rock

Each time I walk by our garden, I am reminded that we need to thank parent David Rindt and North River Landscaping for contributing their time to Elkins Pointe MS a few weeks ago.   By giving time on a Saturday, they turned our overgrown garden into a well-pruned masterpiece, ready for Spring blossoms! Thank you to the Rindt family and North River Landscaping for making EPMS an even more beautiful place. Thank you to all of our business partners who contribute to EPMS.

The Fulton County Youth Orchestra

The Fulton County Youth Orchestra will present its Spring Concert this Wednesday at 7pm, at Alpharetta High School. A great program of American classics, including works from Henry Mancini and Leonard Bernstein. It will be great music! They've worked very hard this season. EPMS students Abigail Carpenter and Kendrick Wong will be performing in this concert. We are so proud of their hard work!

International Night

Our International Night was our biggest and best yet, with plenty of food from across the world, local businesses participating, and many talented artists from the Roswell area coming out to make the event extra special. It was a successful fundraiser, but most importantly an event to remember.

Chorus Congrats

Congrats to Mr. Baugh and the chorus program for outstanding LGPE performances!  Combined 7th and 8th grades earned a superior rating.   6th grade earned superior, in all but one sub-category.  This means all 3 music programs earned superiors at their LGPE for the second year in a row. Go Titans!

Seven Brave Titans!

On May 29-31, our Titans will be competing in the Special Olympics State Games at Emory University.  These students will be training hard for the track and field competitions.  The seven Titans representing Elkins Pointe are Bennett Key; Drew Casa; Achin Chugh; Joey Newton; Brooks Taylor; Michael Astorga; and Mason Coleman.  We will also be sending 19 athletes to the Fulton County Local Special Olympics Track and Field event at Tri-Cities High School on Friday, May 8th.

Informational Items

21st Century Learning Corner

by Anne Sexton, School Technology Specialist

This week at Elkins Pointe students are using our computer labs and iPad carts to take the Georgia Dept of Education Student Survey of Instructional Practice. This survey provides valuable data on students' perceptions of teacher performance, and helps teachers find areas for improvement.

In other news, the installation of our Epson Brightlink projectors continues.  The vendor is very anxious to have us up and running, so much so that they plan to continue work while we are on Spring Break!  The work to improve our school technology never stops at EPMS!

BOTT Time!

This Friday is BATTLE OF THE TITANS! What does that mean? Lots of fun, competition, and sports! All three grade levels will enjoy the day participating in a variety of competitions and are encouraged to dress in their team colors, including face paint and hair coloring (parent permitting). Please note that students should still meet dress code standards and that all face/hair painting must be done at home before they come to school. Please refrain from early check-outs on Friday if at all possible, as it is a hectic day full of fun for the students. If it absolutely cannot be avoided, please send your student with a note to the office before school so that they can get it signed and show it to their teacher as a pass when it is time. It is very difficult to locate specific students during BOTT due to the activities taking place, and this will help expedite the process.

Our PTSA is requesting parent volunteers to help with this event as well.

We especially need DADS for heavy lifting on this event. The P.E. Department needs help manning water stations, First Aid stations, set-up/clean-up, keeping stations stocked, etc.

Student Surveys

This week our students will have an opportunity to take surveys about their teachers. Please have a conversation with them about this and remind them to take it seriously. Teachers use these results to reflect and identify areas for improvement.

Georgia Milestones Testing

GA Milestones Testing will begin when we return from Spring Break. Hopefully you have stayed involved in discussions throughout the year and know some of the changes that are coming our way with the new testing, but here are a few reminders:

  • The writing section will be quite different. Visit our school's website for a video of the workshop we held to explain this portion of the assessment.
  • Expect more rigorous test questions that require a deeper level of critical thinking, drawing connections between different reading passages, and open-ended questions as well. Because the test questions are far more than multiple choice on the new test, we anticipate that scoring will take much longer, and results may not be available until the middle of Fall semester.
  • Because of online testing, students will test in either the morning or the afternoon. Make sure your child brings a healthy lunch to school each day to keep their energy up for afternoon testing.
  • The testing window lasts for two weeks because some of the students take an online version of the test, and computer lab space is limited. Because of this, the county allots two days for each subject test. Note that student groups testing online will be TAG, ESOL, and Special Education. Our schedule is tentatively set to hold all testing on the first day of each subject, allowing for one "regular" day between each test. We hope this will allow for students to rest, study, and recuperate each time - in addition to handle make ups.
    • 4/16 - 4/17 - ELA Sections 1 & 2
    • 4/20-4/21 - ELA Section 3 Writing
    • 4/22 - 4/23 - Math Sections 1 & 2
    • 4/24 - Make Up Day
    • 4/27 - 4/28 - Science Sections 1 & 2
    • 4/29 - 4/30 - Social Studies Sections 1&2
    • 5/1 - Make Up Day

Click here for a more detailed testing schedule, including class periods for the afternoon of each testing day. Note that student groups are testing at different times due to the requirements for online testing, so be sure to read carefully for your child's student group and view the schedule accordingly.
