This week at Elkins Pointe

Hello, Titans!

What an absolutely fabulous week last week! Our PTSA did a FABULOUS job with Staff Appreciation Week. Full of celebrations and achievements, it was one of those weeks that leaves a principal bursting with pride. From watching Dr. Bearden welcome the Rising 6th grade Parents Thursday night to watching our staff perform at the Talent Show to receiving notice after notice about student achievements in the community ... we have so much to be proud of, Titans!

Let's Celebrate!

Titans Rock!!

We received a 5 out of 5 Climate Star rating from the state of Georgia!  We scored perfectly in all four dimensions of school climate: Safety, Relationships, Teaching and Learning, and Institutional Environment.  Woo hoo!

Talent Show

Did you miss the Talent Show last week? It was absolutely wonderful, and as always our Terrific Titan Staff did a number to close the show. I walked in with the Rising 6th grade parents just as they started their number. Afterward, an incoming parent said to me: "It's obvious how much your staff loves these students. It takes a lot of heart to get up on a stage and do something so fun to benefit the kids." I could not agree more! Check out our Titans who made the moment special!

Teaching with Fire

Kudos to the 8th grade Science Team, who received the Teaching with Fire Award from Ms. Springman this week. The Teaching with Fire award goes to teachers who bring innovation and excitement into their lessons on a daily basis, and our 8th grade Science team has truly raised the bar this year with increased collaboration, creation, and critical thinking.  Congrats to Ms. Strickland, Ms. Ray, Ms. Kennedy, Ms. Tapia, and Ms. Osborne.

Track News

At the Fulton County track meet this weekend, all of our Titans did a GREAT job! Our very own Abigail Rendt (7th grade) won the 800m in a blazing fast time of 2:32 (15 seconds ahead of the second place finisher). Way to go Abigail!

Making a Difference

Many thanks to an amazing staff!  This week we recognized some of our staff that truly MAKES A DIFFERENCE in the lives of students each and every day. Congratulations to Joanne Martin, Michelle Levine, Makesha Sims, Stan Broach, Lynnette Lindesay, Ms. Isbell, and Ms. Krishna on receiving the M.A.D. award for March.

Congratulations Mr. Wilson and the EPMS Band!

Congrats to Mr. Wilson!  Band received superior ratings for their LGPE performance.

International Day of French Language and Culture

Our French students celebrated International Day of French Language and Culture last week. One of our student groups is pictured here, celebrating the day!

Kudos to Ms. Ward

We are so lucky to have you!  Ms. Ward has been recognized as the Northwest Learning Community's professional of the year!  Click here to see her awesome smile.

Science Olympiad

Our Science Olympiad team placed 5th out of the entire state of Georgia this weekend! This is our highest level of performance to date, and we couldn't be more pleased! Thank you to all who participated - both parents and staff, with a special thank you to Ms. Joanne Martin who gives countless hours to the success of this team. Click here for participant list

EPMS Dance Students

Good luck to our dancing Titans!  Studio 23 of Roswell is presenting their company showcase of dances that will be featured at regional and national competitions this season. Seven Brave Titans!

On May 29-31, our Titans will be competing in the Special Olympics State Games at Emory University.  These students will be training hard for the track and field competitions.  The seven Titans representing Elkins Pointe are Bennett Key; Drew Casa; Achin Chugh; Joey Newton; Brooks Taylor; Michael Astorga; and Mason Coleman.  We will also be sending 19 athletes to the Fulton County Local Special Olympics Track and Field event at Tri-Cities High School on Friday, May 8th.

Informational Items

Progress Reports

Progress Reports went home last week. Did you see your child's report? Be sure to ask them for it and take the time to have a meaningful conversation about school.

21st Century Learning Corner

by Anne Sexton, School Technology Specialist

This week we continued our preparations for the Georgia Milestones test, which will be given after Spring Break (see schedule below).  Some of our students will be tested online for the first time, using both computers and our iPad Air devices.  Last week we received keyboards for the iPads, which will allow students greater control over their typing for the test.  Students will be given ample time the next two weeks to practice both the test format and the equipment being used so that they are well prepared for this new test.

Student Surveys

Soon students will have an opportunity to take surveys about their teachers. Please have a conversation with them about this and remind them to take it seriously. Teachers use these results to reflect and identify areas for improvement.

Ready, set... mark your calendar for our International Night!

This fabulous night is on Wednesday, March 25th from 6:00-8:00 p.m.  This extravaganza is free and will take place in the gym and cafeteria.  Our students represent over 45 countries, and our faculty represents over 10 countries!  Bring your whole family to celebrate the diversity of our school and feast on international food from homes and local restaurants.  You will also enjoy live performances from many cultures, experience cultural music, play cultural games, and have an opportunity to purchase souvenirs from our World Market.  Tickets for food and activities will be sold at the door for $0.25 each. Most food items range from 4-6 tickets.  Come see what the Titans are all about!

BOTT Time!

Georgia Milestones Testing

GA Milestones Testing will begin when we return from Spring Break. Hopefully you have stayed involved in discussions throughout the year and know some of the changes that are coming our way with the new testing, but here are a few reminders:

  • Expect more rigorous test questions that require a deeper level of critical thinking, drawing connections between different reading passages, and open-ended questions as well. Because the test questions are far more than multiple choice on the new test, we anticipate that scoring will take much longer, and results may not be available until the middle of Fall semester.
  • Because of online testing, students will test in either the morning or the afternoon. Make sure your child brings a healthy lunch to school each day to keep their energy up for afternoon testing.
  • The testing window lasts for two weeks because some of the students take an online version of the test, and computer lab space is limited. Because of this, the county allots two days for each subject test. Note that student groups testing online will be TAG, ESOL, and Special Education. Our schedule is tentatively set to hold all testing on the first day of each subject, allowing for one "regular" day between each test. We hope this will allow for students to rest, study, and recuperate each time - in addition to handle make ups.
