This week at Elkins Pointe

Hellooooooooooo, Titans!

My apologies for our late newsletter this week, but sometimes technology does not always cooperate when we need for it to do so. We are looking forward to having our students IN THE BUILDING this Friday, March 13th for a make-up day. We need to make up for some lost time these last few weeks. Please remember that this day is not optional and that teachers will move forward with their curriculum as a normal school day. Now, I am so excited about this week's newsletter - so much to celebrate. So many reasons to be a Proud Titan ... let's get to it!

Let's Celebrate!

Thank you PTSA!

An enormous thank you to our fabulous PTSA who put on a lovely "Breakfast at Tiffany's" for our Employees of the Year last week - not to mention an incredible 7th grade Social the day before. Each year it's bigger and better, and we just could not be luckier to have such a powerhouse PTSA. We don't know what we would do without you!

Staff Appreciation Week

Did you know that next week is Staff Appreciation week at EPMS? Take a moment to celebrate your child's teachers by sending an email or small note of thanks ... you would be amazed at how that can brighten our days.

Orchestra News

Way to go Mr. Gamba.... The 8th grade Orchestra received 'Superior' ratings from all of the judges on their performance evaluation.  This is the highest possible score, which means that both Orchestra groups received this honor!  Go Titans!

Art Contest

Congrats to 7th graders Jordyn Kaufman for winning 1st place, and Jade Sugihara for 3rd place, and Harita Yepuri for receiving honorable mention, in "My Mount Fuji," Japanese Art Contest.  The contest was sponsored by the Consulate General of Japan! They competed against students from AL, GA, NC, SC, and VA in the 6th-9th grade category.  Staff from the consulate general of Japan dropped by Ms. Johnson's class to congratulate Jordyn.  He also shared that our school produced the most winners!  Go Titans!

BREAKING NEWS!

Both of our Tech Team members, Priya Soneji and Andrea Billeter brought home awards from the State Technology Competition in Macon, GA this weekend. Priya brought home 1st place in her category of Robotics, and Andrea brought home 2nd in Non-Multimedia Applications. Please congratulate these young ladies. They both put in more effort after winning the county's competition to make sure that they brought home awards to Elkins Pointe Middle School. As Ms. Lindesay says: "Who says that girls can't be Techies, too?"

Linguapalooza

On Saturday, February 28th, Fulton County held its annual Linguapalooza World Language competition at Northwestern Middle School.  Over 450 of middle school world language students from across the county were interviewed in the language they are studying by judges.  Click here to view the list of students and the awards received.

BIG NEWS!

Congratulations to 6th grader Sloan Salinas and 7th grader Elizabeth Nicholson, who both placed at the state level competition this Saturday for the Georgia PTA Reflections event. Both young ladies will move on to compete at the national level with entries from all over the country! Way to go, Titans!

6th Grade Speaker

Kudos to Ms. Hutson for inviting Dave Gheesling to talk with your classes.  Not only did he agree to talk with your classes, he took on the entire 6th grade!   He shared his collection of meteorites with all of the 6th grade Science classes, in the media center.  This was a great way to kick off the unit on Space!

Mini Science Fair

Ms. Kennedy's 8th grade Science classes put on a mini science fair for their project on Newton's Laws. Yesterday they invited Mrs. Hutson's 2nd and 3rd period classes down to attend the fair for a few minutes at the beginning of class.  All of the Titans involved had so much fun, and our 8th graders did such a great job teaching!

Congratulations to Anna Song!

She is the winner of the Yes I Can Award, which honors students with exceptionalities who shine.  Anna will be representing EPMS this year at a banquet on March 26th, at Riverwood High School.  Way to go Anna!

Informational Items

21st Century Learning Corner

by Anne Sexton, School Technology Specialist

Last week our school was hit by an internet outage.  In a school which relies as heavily as we do on technology, this could be a major issue.  But, our teachers are creative and flexible, and the learning did not stop in the absence of internet connectivity!

Just one example:  Ms. Osborne used her Apple VGA cable to project her iPhone onto the board and learning went on uninterrupted!

Quick thinking is critical to success in the 21st Century Classroom, and our teachers are great examples of the ability to improvise in unexpected situations!

Do you have an artistic 8th grader?

Do you think they may like to help design or paint our 8th grade mural this year? Click here to learn more about this opportunity, and please note the deadline if your 8th grader is interested in joining in the fun.

Devour a dessert!

Watch your friends and favorite teachers take the stage in "Sweet -n-Sour". A production that offers a sweet taste, while spotlighting sour villains of the stage.  The performance will showcase vocal powerhouse performances from Jordan Thorne (Wizard of Oz), Blake Kersey and Hailey Oleszczuk (Lil Shop of Horrors).   Director, Mr. Dehart, has also incorporated several EPMS staff to grace the stage.  Mrs. Alice Smith will open the show as the evil stepmother of Snow White,  Mrs. Suckow will show off her artistic talent as Cruella De Ville, Mr. Hines will style the stage with a wild and unforgettable Mad Hatter dance and many more.  Students are having so much fun getting prepared for this great performance.  At right, see Caille Chilton being fitted for her role as Belle in Beauty in the Beast. Tickets are 7$ and on sale in the media center.  Showtime is at 7:00 P.M. in the gym.

Pajamas in school?... yes!

The 7th grade is hosting a pajama pants fundraiser on Friday, March 20.  The purpose of the fundraiser is to raise money for their field trip.   Click here for more info.
