This week at Elkins Pointe

What a cold, blustery day outside! I hope that you are bundled up and inside as you read this newsletter. It is a bit lengthy, as we have plenty to celebrate and lots going on. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Honors Breakfasts over the next two weeks. Please remember to be on time so that we have plenty of time to honor all of the recipients.

Let's Celebrate!

New Year's Card Contest Winner

Way to go.... Joshua Kaufman won 1st place in Japanese "Nengajo" (New Year's Card) Contest.  Check out his winning card at https://sites.google.com/site/gatjweb/home/award.  Joshua's card will be displayed at the Consulate General of Japan.  His work has also been submitted in a national contest.  Good luck Joshua!

Teacher and Employee of the Year

Congratulations to our three finalists for Teacher of the Year: Annie Marmiol, Jennifer Okiyama, and Meredith Tongue. We would also like to congratulate our three finalists for Employee of the Year; Ida Ward, Edith Woodruff, and Cathy Anderson. Way to go, ladies! We plan to announce the winners this week, so stay tuned!

Teacher Selectors

Did you know that our school has the largest number of Teacher Selectors for Fulton County? That's right! 6 of our teachers have joined the online interview process as screeners for future candidates. Such a great honor!

Basketball News

Kudos to our basketball teams, who have had a wonderful season so far. The boys had a strong win over Webb Bridge Friday night. Way to go!

Honors Breakfasts

Don't forget the Honors Breakfasts start this week! Please double check with your child to make sure they brought home their invitation.

Geography Bee

Good luck to our Geography Bee participants, who are competing this afternoon. Click here to see a list of the class winners!

Guest Speaker

We are excited to announce a guest speaker for 7th grade on February 18th . In honor of Black History Month, master storyteller Rob Cleveland  will share tales about High John the Conqueror, one of America's first folk heroes.  This will be a fun learning experience that will introduce to students to many different cultures and stories.

Author Visit

Congrats to Ms. Sims for inviting author Sharon Draper to visit with her reading students.  Ms. Draper has been honored as the National Teacher of the Year, is a five-time winner of the Coretta Scott King Literary Awards, and is a New York Times bestselling author.  Students who have Ms. Sims for Reading have read at least one if not more of her books. (Personally, this former English teacher is completely "geeked out" that she will be here!) Ms. Draper will share some of her works, experiences, and give students advice on becoming better writers.  This visit will take place on Friday February 20th and will be for 8th graders.

Informational Items

Social Media Use

Please remind your students that use of social media at school is prohibited. We allow students to use devices in class for instructional purposes and 8th graders at lunch for music and games. Unfortunately, as we all know, social media often leads to inappropriate use, insults, and hurt feelings. Please help us keep our students focused on learning when they are at school and reinforce this at home. By the way, have you checked your child's apps lately? Instagram recently has several accounts that were created with the sole purpose of insulting students at EPMS. I contacted them and asked to have them shut down, but I need your help to monitor these things. Together, we can keep technology in our students hands. Thank you!

Special Olympics Magnets

Are you interested in purchasing a Special Olympics magnet to show your support for such a great cause? See attached, and email  lambertr@fultonschools.org with any questions.

8th Grade Dance

Calling all 8th grade parents!   Join us for a planning meeting for this year's 8th grade dance, Thursday, February 5th at 8:45 am in the Elkins teacher's lounge.  From decorations to ticket sales, we have the perfect job for you!!! If you have questions, please contact this year's co-chairs, Marnie Allen (714)742-5134 or Ruthie Ellis (404)386-5665.

Atlanta Hawks

Atlanta Hawks and Fulton County can mean only one thing... a fun filled night!  Each year the Atlanta Hawks offer discounted tickets to employees, students, family and friends as part of Fulton County Schools Night with the Atlanta Hawks.  Click here for purchasing information.

Milton High School Elective Night

Milton High School will hold its evening event to learn about electives on February 3rd. Please note that the main event begins at 7pm and that parents of TAG or Special Education students should plan on also attending the earlier meeting at 6pm. Click here for more details.  (p.s. GREAT NEWS! Our future Eagles will also have a field trip to MHS this year, as RHS has done for some time. Thank you so much to Principal Brian Jones at MHS for making this possible!)

Hat Day for 7th Grade Field Trip Fundraiser

Don't miss out on your chance to wear a hat all day at school... for $1.  You can pay in the front atrium, in the morning.  Hat day will be on February 6th. Proceeds will benefit the 7th grade field trip.

Choice option!

This is a great opportunity for parents to share with the District staff the educational values they hold dear.   Click here for more details.   If you cannot attend the forum, please review the Parent Forum presentation on the Choice Options website.  You can also share your insights via this email address: schoolchoiceoptions@fultonschools.org

Girl power!

This is a wonderful opportunity for girls to use computer science and technology to help solve a thematic social problem (global health, safer world, & intelligent technology).  If interested in joining the Project Girls team, contact Ms. Springman at SpringmanM@fultonschools.org by February 6th.

Lice Information

Parents... don't forget this is the time of year when students are likely to get lice. We had a couple incidents last week, and these parents have been notified, along with their classmates. Lice outbreaks are very common among school children, especially in the winter when skin is dry.  Head lice do not carry any disease and their presence does not indicate a lack of cleanliness. Please click below for information that will be helpful to you in keeping your child free of lice.
