This week at Elkins Pointe

Helloooooooo, Titans!

As I put together this week's newsletter, I cannot be more proud of ALL of our celebrations. You send us some amazing Titans every day, and with such a great staff, we are making amazing things happen. I am pleased to report that our Student Growth Percentiles for 2014 have arrived, and we are seeing great improvements! Our 8th grade Science saw the greatest gains in comparison to our 2013 SGPs, and several of our teachers have Median Growth Percentiles over 70%, with most of the school being at or above 50%. What is a Growth Percentile, you may ask? Click here to learn more. It is EXCITING to see improvements in this area, one of the rare ways we can use data to compare apples to apples instead of apples to oranges.

Pajama Fundraiser Results

We are proud of Ms. Okiyama's classes for participating in a noteworthy cause - A Caring World raised $338.15 for the Dian Fossey fund for Gorilla habitats.

Pointe Team

Congrats to these sixth graders who made the Pointe team (click here to view names)!  These students are a vital part of the transition process for our rising 6th graders and have been selected after a rigorous process to represent our school.

Titan Up Celebration

Our Titan Up Celebration last Monday was a lot of fun, and we are looking forward to our semester celebration just after Winter Break. It will be a BIG CELEBRATION, with some special guests, so stay tuned. We honored many students at the celebrations this week, click here to see the names of the honorees. Way to TITAN UP!

Science Olympiad

Our Science Olympiad team competed this past Saturday at Chattahoochee High School. Against a highly competitive field that included out-of-state, championship teams, we placed 9th out of 23 teams. This is an excellent result, given the quality of the competition. Two of our teams even placed 2nd for their event. Please congratulate the following exemplary performances: 2nd Place Dynamic Planet:  Jack Levitt and George Ye and also 2nd Place Robo-Cross: Priya Soneji and Lily Howell

Latino Youth Leadership Conference

Last Saturday, fifteen Elkins Pointe Middle School Hispanic students from grades 6-8 attended the 15th annual Latino Youth Leadership Conference in Atlanta. The event started with music, fun and dancing. Students from all of Georgia's middle and high schools listened to speeches from radio show hosts, the President of Westminster Schools, and the President of the American Latino Association. The keynote speaker, Dr. Victor Rios wowed the students with his personal story. They heard and saw Dr. Rios' life as a child and Latino youth growing up in Los Angeles. Students were engaged throughout his speech because he challenged them to think about their own lives not as a failure but a success. The students are pictured here.

8th Grade Trips

Our 8th graders had a GREAT time on both field trips last week as well. As you see here, the students had fun around town, on River Boat and Trolley Rides in addition to taking in some authentic History of Georgia as well. Our 8th graders who stayed in town enjoyed their trip to Barrington Hall. Click here to view the newsletter from Barrington Hall, picturing our Titans as they took in local history.

Junior Achievement

And finally, our first field trip to Junior Achievement was a great success, even if we had a bit of a late start due to buses. The students were dressed professionally for their day of "work" and impressed all of the volunteers. The students even got to meet local celebrity Freddie the Falcon from the Atlanta Falcons! Be sure to check out our Twitter account for photos from the trip as well as more of the 8th grade photos (@elkinspointe).

Teacher Celebrations

Congratulations to teacher Adam Hardigree, recipient of the Teaching with Fire Award as well as teacher Cindi Nicholls, for having the highest Student Growth Percentile in the school, with her reading students having a Median Growth Percentile of 90%!

Flu Precautions

Flu season is here, and it is important that we remind our Titans to be careful to stay healthy! The biggest message I would like to convey to you is to please keep your children home when they are sick. Many students want to come to school even if they have a fever, but this breeds contagion and results in more sickness. Please take the necessary precautions... click here for more details.

Parent Workshop

We will be hosting a workshop named "Transitions to Milestones" this Wednesday at 10am in the EPMS Media Center. If you are interested in learning more about the new test to replace CRCT, don't miss out!

Interested in Becoming a Substitute Teacher?

You're in luck!  The application window is open now thru 12/19.  Click here to learn how to get started.

Parent Info Night: Teen Drug Use

Roswell High School is hosting an event tomorrow evening from 6:30pm - 7:45pm where Fulton County School Police will talk about the latest trends in teen drug use. Listen to those who share experiences with struggle of experimentation and addiction. There will be new speakers and topics. As a parent, it is important to stay informed so that you can support your children during this time of adolescence.

Exam Schedule

Seen here is the Final Exam schedule for the end of the semester. Please remember that all three grade levels will have exams during this time. Of particular note:

  • 6th and 7th grade will take their final exam of the semester, and 8th grade will take a cumulative exam for the entire semester.

  • In addition, some subjects may give exams that are cumulative in nature, such as Math, due to the nature of their curriculum.

  • Some of our 6th and 7th graders are taking field trips as well, which is why students of certain teachers will take their exam for a certain period a bit early.

  • Please make sure that all students are present for exams, and note that any absences without a doctor's note or principal permission will be unexcused.
