This week at Elkins Pointe

Hello, Titans!

Another lovely week behind us, with a great kick off to soccer season, both games well attended. One loss and one win so far, and we are excited to see what transpires this week. Thursday morning, we held a short memorial for September 11th via the televised announcements. I read the Presidential Proclamation, students Owen Carney, Delaney Cullen, and Jordan Thorne sang the National Anthem, and we discussed how lucky our students are to attend a school like EPMS, where they meet people from all walks of life, grow up to embrace diversity, and accept each other's differences. I told them that I am proud to be the principal of such a school and hope that they take pride in this opportunity as well. It was a special moment, and throughout the day many students came up to me and said that they liked what I said about our school. I meant every word of it and love what I do every day. Thank you for the opportunity to serve your children as principal of Elkins Pointe Middle School.

Let's Celebrate!

Titan Up!

This Friday we will have our next Titan Up Celebration, to take place during the lunch periods. Staff and Students will be celebrated for a variety of achievements. Award recipients will be recognized in next week's Titan Talk, so stay tuned!

Has your child recently experienced an achievement that you'd like to see recognized in Titan Talk? Let me know!

Urgent Reminder

Please don't forget that Free & Reduced Meal benefits expire on September 22nd for students that have not renewed their application. Applications take a week to process, so be sure to renew your application as soon as possible to avoid a lapse in benefits where students will be charged full price for meals. Click here for details. Letters have gone home with individual students as well as a telephone blast. Be sure to remind your neighbors!

Informational Items

Reading with Titans

Are you interested in volunteering for Reading with Titans this year? This is a great opportunity to read one-on-one with some of our struggling readers on a weekly basis. If you can spare just one hour a week, we will pair you with two students (25 minutes each) to help them build their confidence and make a true difference in their lives. Interested? Please email Alice Smith at smitha1@fultonschools.org to let her know.

8th Grade Trip to Savannah

Don't miss out! The first payment for the trip is due October 1st, along with a $50 minimum payment and scholarship application for those interested in applying. Attached please find the forms for the trip, in English and Spanish and for those who are interested in a scholarship, please have your student ask Dr. Bearden for an application.

Comcast Internet Essentials program

I am pleased to share some information about Comcast's Internet Essentials program (www.internetessentials.com).  Internet Essentials is not just another Comcast product or service. It provides eligible families with low-cost broadband service for $9.95 a month, plus tax; the option to purchase a full-service, Internet-ready computer for under $149.99, plus tax; and many options for digital literacy training in print, online, and in-person. If you know somebody who would like to have internet access but finds the cost a bit much, have them check out the website listed or share this flyer with them.

Media Release

As you can see, we love sharing photos of our Titans through our website, through Titan Talk, and other forms of Media. Please be sure that your student's media pass is signed near the front of the agenda so that they do not miss out on opportunities. Likewise, be sure to notify the school if you prefer that your child's image not be used for media.

Technology Usage

Please remember that students are allowed to use their personal devices for instructional purposes at EPMS. There is a technology usage agreement within the packet of information that went home on the first day of school (and in the student agenda). Students are responsible for their belongings and should keep them locked in their lockers during any time that they are not in use. (Note, 8th grade has privileges to use personal devices during lunch.) Please note that students will be encouraged to bring devices to school but never required. Keep this in mind if your child tells you that they "need" a new phone for school.

Also, as we increase our efforts to incorporate technology on a daily basis, we are extending our video usage policy to include videos that are pulled from non-educational websites such as Youtube and Vimeo. Videos of any length that contain any form of violence, death, adult language or situations will be approved by administration in advance, with parent permission forms as needed.

Student Clubs

Students had an opportunity to sign up for advisement clubs this week, click here to see the options that were provided. Our goal is to start clubs this Friday, September 19th, to take place every other Friday. Additionally, students have the opportunity to sign up for before and after school clubs in the front atrium this week

Cold and Flu Season is Here

Please remind your child about the importance of washing their hands and (most importantly) refraining from sharing food in the cafeteria. It is not uncommon to see students sharing food with one another in our café. While this is always nice to see, it is an easy way to spread germs. Additionally, a few of you have asked questions about the virus that's being discussed on the news. Click here for more details about the Enterovirus (EV-D68) in English and Spanish.

Opportunities for Fundraising

Where do you grocery shop? Remember that there are simple ways to earn money for the school by simply participating when you go to the grocery store.

If you shop at Publix, remember to pick up your scan card from the front office (or ask your child to do so).

NEW PROCESS: If you shop at Kroger, click here for details.

Support our chorus by shopping for gifts and treats online at http://gafundraising.com with the code 3083607.

For those of you who participated in the Citrus Grove fundraiser, remember that the shipments arrive in October. Stay tuned for details.
