This week at Elkins Pointe

As we begin our fifth week of school, we are hitting

8th Grade Science airplane lab

our full stride. Walking the halls on a daily basis, I see students having fun with learning: paper airplane labs,

language arts classes learning concepts outside, and goal setting for the year ... in Japanese.

Dr. Foote's class learning outdoors

The students are taking their first assessments and preparing for their first progress reports to go home, parents are getting their access codes for Home Access Center, and the teachers are getting excited about the kick off for clubs in just two weeks!   It's an exciting time to be a Titan, and we could not do it all without you!

Celebrations

Kiwanis Club honors Teacher of the Year and works with On Pointe students

This last week our local Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell held a luncheon to honor the teachers of the year in the Roswell area. Our very own teacher of the year Mrs. Miyuki Johnson and I enjoyed the luncheon and want to extend our thanks to Kiwanis for this lovely gesture.

Our On Pointe students have started the first charter for a Builder's Club through Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell as well. Their first project will be to help build our float for the Roswell Youth Day Parade on October 11th. All students will be invited to join us for the parade. Stay tuned for more details, and we hope to see you all there!

Robotics Club

Our very first Robotics club got off to a great start this week with enough interest for both a 6th grade and an upper-grades club. If you are interested, please email sponsor Anu Krishna at Krishna@fultonschools.org.

Congratulations Dr. Shandor!

Congratulations to our Area Superintendent, Dr. Vic Shandor. He has accepted a promotion to Superintendent of York County School Division in Virginia and will be moving on during October to start his position in November. Dr. Shandor has had a major impact in the Northwest Community and certainly on Elkins Pointe Middle School. With his expectation of innovation and constant support, he has guided me to be a stronger principal, stood by our community in some of our most devastating moments, and always kept his ardent desire for student success at the forefront of every decision he makes. He will be greatly missed, and I am certain he will do great things in Virginia. While our new Area Superintendent has not yet been announced, I assure you that Dr. Avossa is thinking carefully about his decision, and I look forward to sharing details when I have them.

Titan Up!

Our next Titan Up celebration is coming soon ... look for your students to come home and tell you about another celebration before the end of this month!

Has your child achieved something recently that you would like to have recognized? Be sure to email and let me know so that I can recognize them in Titan Talk.

Informational Items

Advisement Update

Our new advisement program begins today, September 8th. We have made a few adjustments to our original plan by refraining from "return" periods during advisement time. As we began to prepare for implementation, we realized that the plan would result in students waiting too long for intervention (they would only have returned to class every 8 days). As a result, advisement time will mostly be spent for study hall, with every other Friday serving as time for our continued work with Character Education or Clubs, respectively. (Note that some of the Character Education lessons will extend to include Mondays.) This means that students will remain in the same advisement every day other than club days (which will be every other Friday).

Student Clubs

Students will have an opportunity to sign up for clubs this week, both advisement clubs and before/after school clubs. Later this week they will receive a brochure to select their top choices for club advisement, and during lunch they will have a chance to view the "Club Fair" boards in the front atrium to select their before/after school areas of interest as well. We are very excited about this and looking forward to 100% of our Titans being plugged in to clubs and activities for the 2014-2015 school year.

Reading with Titans

Are you interested in volunteering for Reading with Titans this year? This is a great opportunity to read one-on-one with some of our struggling readers on a weekly basis. If you can spare just one hour a week, we will pair you with two students (25 minutes each) to help them build their confidence and make a true difference in their lives. Interested? Please email Alice Smith at smitha1@fultonschools.org to let her know.

Sports News

Our sports season is ramping up, with our first Soccer game this week on 9/10 against Ridgeview. We hope that you will come out to join us for the 5:00 start time at EPMS. Remember that Volleyball will be in October, and Basketball will begin after the winter holiday. Stay tuned for more details.

8th Grade Trip to Savannah

Don't miss out! The first payment for the trip is due October 1st, along with a $50 minimum payment and scholarship application for those interested in applying. Attached please find the forms for the trip, in English and Spanish and for those who are interested in a scholarship, please have your student ask Dr. Bearden for an application.

Picture Day

Don't forget that picture day is this Wednesday. If your child has failed to bring home their packet of information to purchase pictures, please email Ms. Suckow for details. Suckow@fultonschools.org.

Comcast Internet Essentials program

I am pleased to share some information about Comcast's Internet Essentials program (www.internetessentials.com).  Internet Essentials is not just another Comcast product or service. It provides eligible families with low-cost broadband service for $9.95 a month, plus tax; the option to purchase a full-service, Internet-ready computer for under $149.99, plus tax; and many options for digital literacy training in print, online, and in-person. If you know somebody who would like to have internet access but finds the cost a bit much, have them check out the website listed or share this flyer with them.
