Hello, Titans!

Well we may be tired from a long night full of Rising 6th Grade Parents and a spectacular turn-out for International Night, but wasn't it fun?! As we approach Spring Break, the work of the Governance Council, and CRCT soon, I have lots to share (and celebrate), so please read carefully.

This week at EPMS
Celebrations:
  • International Night was a wonderful event, with our largest turn-out ever. The performances, displays, foods, and crafts were all absolutely amazing. We would like to give a special thank you to the following people:
    • Northwest LC Teacher of the Year Miyuki Johnson for all of her coordination and hard work.
    • All of our students who performed, including: Drama Club, Thomas Penhallegon, Harita and Harshita Yepuri, Shea Rose Trenholm, and the Fulton County String Band (with a cameo from Mr. Seth Gamba).
    • All of the staff members who helped prepare, plan, and present.
    • All of our parents who participated in a variety of ways, especially Ms. Pabian, Ms. Arnett, and Ms. Cowles for their extra support.
    • All of our local businesses who donated food at no cost: Ippolito's on Holcomb Bridge Rd, Chin Chin Chinese Restaurant on Rucker Rd, Slopes BBQ on Crossville Rd, and Moe's on Crossville Rd.
    • All of our local restaurants who catered with a significant discounted cost for our event: Athens Greek, Douceur de France, Jet's Pizza, and Indian Chef.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this such a special event!
  • Linguapalooza offers students the chance to show off their language skills.  On Saturday, February 22nd, 30 EPMS World Language students participated in the third annual Fulton Middle School World Language Competition - Linguapalooza.
Almost 400 students participated and were judged by more than 50 teachers from all over the county. For the competition, students participated in a one on one interview with a teacher from another school in the language they are learning to assess their speaking skills. Certificates and ribbons were awarded to the students based on their proficiency: Superior, Excellent and Distinguished. Congratulations to all of the participants!
    • Superior: French Lisa O'Brien, Zachary Smith, Nathan Smith, Emma Strickland, Oussama Kerzazi, Rylyn Monahan, Camille Wise, Chloe Sluss
    • Superior: Japanese Coleman Fox, Jess Miller, Jordan Schroyer, Maansi Shah, Rebecca Choi, Jordan Widis, Keyera Marshall, Kira O'Hare, Cameron Overall, Jack Rush
    • Superior: Spanish Ryan Wise, Thomas Penhallegon, Nilay Dixit, Emily Salmond, Rebecca Jeltuhin, Cassie Manrique, Ramtin Mahmoudkhani
    • Excellent: French Nia Smith
    • Excellent: Japanese Natalie Miller
    • Distinguished: French Jackson Levitt
    • Distinguished: Spanish Zachary Peterson, Stephanie Albregts
  • Our Teacher of the Year Miyuki Johnson and Professional of the Year Denise Lewis, along with nominees Jody Collins and Karen Jones, will be honored at at breakfast hosted by the PTSA on Thursday, April 17.  To help make this celebration a success, please follow the link: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0548A4A822A64-teacher4/1347248
  • Congratulations to student Ida Klausen who attended the Eastern Sectional Southern Zone age group Swim meet at Georgia Tech. She qualified for 5 events and 2 relays and was seeded/ranked in the 40th - but in her favorite event 200 Butterfly she was seeded 24, which is a very high ranking in a meet like this - with kids from more than 60 swim teams and from 8 states. Kudos!
  • Student Owen Carney had the unique opportunity to perform as part of the American Organization of Kodaly Educators program on March 21st. We are so proud of him.
  • Our Media Specialist extraordinaire, Susan Grigsby, was recently selected to serve on the National Conference Committee for the American Association of School Librarians and also received a scholarship to attend Tech Forum Atlanta, where she was today. She continues to seek ways to bring innovation to EPMS and support your students.  We are lucky to have her!
  • The Interact Spring Conference was March 22 at the Cottage School.  Schools from the Rotary District 6900 came together for team building activities, a service project that raised money for the polio fund, and an awards ceremony.  Elkins Pointe won "Best Overall Middle School Interact Club!" This is a great accomplishment as this is only the second operating year of the Interact Club at Elkins. We are so proud!
  • Our Science Olympiad Team placed 6TH IN THE ENTIRE STATE! We are so proud of their hard work, and the results are better every year! Please congratulate these individuals on their achievements:

Informational Items:

  • Picture Day is next week, April 1st, and it is pre-pay only, so don't miss out! Click here for details.
  • This week, on April 3rd, our 8th grade students will have an opportunity to learn more about their respective high schools. RHS students will go to RHS for a field trip in the morning. Click here for the permission form that will go home with your child on Monday. If they do not have the signed form, they will not be allowed to attend. MHS students will remain at Elkins Pointe and have an opportunity for a question and answer session with several staff members from MHS that will visit EPMS to spend some time with the future Eagles.
  • Have you taken your parent survey yet? Remember that these will help inform not only the Title I plan but our School Governance Council's work on our 3-year strategic plan. Please take a moment to share your opinion with us: http://school.fultonschools.org/ms/elkinspointe/Pages/ParentSurvey.aspx
  • With Spring Break just around the corner, this is a gentle reminder that any early pick-ups from school on Friday April 4th will be considered unexcused without a doctor's note for medical absence. We know that many parents will still check their students out to get an early start on the road. Remember that the office will be very busy and if you are choosing to do so, we strongly recommend that you send a note with a specific time for your child to have signed before school. This will allow them to show it to their teacher as a pass a few minutes before and be waiting for you in the office. Check-outs will not be permitted after 3:45pm. Thank you!
  • Remember that student athletes are required to have yearly physicals. I wanted to make sure that you received the invitation to the FREE physicals that Resurgens Orthopaedics is performing in cooperation with North Fulton Hospital. Attached is the flyer.  Please help spread the word to any athletes that may be interested.  The athlete can print the physical form from the website and bring their completed form on the day of the physicals. Saturday, April 26 from 8am - 12pm, North Fulton Hospital.
  • Course verifications for next year went home recently, and we've received a good number of questions about whether or not your children were recommended for our Advanced Science and Social Studies Classes. Since these courses are not offered in most Fulton County Schools, the course title does not state "Advanced." Click here to see the corresponding course numbers so that you can check them against your child's verification forms. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to your child's current teacher.
  • DATE CORRECTION: On May 10th, we will offer an opportunity for students to take an acceleration test in Mathematics. Is your child talented in Math? Are they the type of student who learns and understands Math faster than the teacher can deliver it? Click here to learn more.
  • Lost and Found is overflowing with jackets, coats, and hats. All items that are still in Lost and Found next Friday, April 4th, will be donated to local charities. So if your child is missing something, remind them that they have one week to stop by the clinic to collect their belongings.
  • Allergy season is here! Medications Reminder:  If a student needs to take any medication at school, an authorization form needs to be filled out.  If the medication is prescription, a doctor signature is required.  The medication needs to be in the original bottle/container and if it is a prescription, we need the container with the prescription label. The SHS-1 is Authorization to Administer and the SHS-2 is Authorization to Carry. Please contact the clinic at Ext 137 with questions.  Forms are available on-line at http://www.fultonschools.org/en/divisions/ops/security/Pages/Parent-and-Student-Resources.aspx
  • 2014-2015 8th Grade SAVANNAH TRIP Information:
    • We are excited to announce the details of next year's 8th grade trip to Savannah. Not only will the trip be half the cost, but will include such exciting events as a visit to the beach and even a River Boat Cruise that includes a DJ and Dancing! Students will arrive in Savannah around noon on the 14th, visit historic sites such as Fort Jackson and the First African Baptist Church before checking into their hotel and dressing up for their night of dancing on the water! On the 15th, students will enjoy a tram ride to tour the city and monuments before heading to the beach where we hope to see Dolphins. After lunch, students will head home with a stop at the Air Force Museum in Warner Robbins. As you can see, this is a trip packed with adventure and plenty of opportunities to make memories that will last a lifetime.
    • Next year's trip will be $189 for November 14th and 15th.
    • Mark your calendars and start saving your money now so that you do not miss out on the fun!
