What Can Happen Without an Advanced Directive
When a client doesn't have a living will or power of attorney prepared before a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer's, family members may find themselves spending a great deal of time in the courtroom.  Probate hearings to appoint a guardian for the client's financial and medical needs can be lengthy and expensive.

Individuals in the early or mild stages of dementia may only experience short episodes of impaired mental function, which is why it's critical that advanced directives be put in place while the client still has "capacity" to make decisions and evaluate legal documents.

With the holidays approaching, take the opportunity to make sure your family members are in good health and that they have taken the proper measures to safeguard themselves in case of an emergency.

To speak directly with an estate planning or guardianship attorney about the most appropriate options for yourself or your family call 312.201.0900.
